The other week I upgraded to IE5.01 and noticed a few problems after...one
being that animated gifs on web pages only cycled once instead of
continuous. I tried uninstalling it but to no avail. Since then I have
formatted my PC and started from scratch again just using the IE5 version
that is built into Win98 SE (as was previous to the IE5 upgrade).

But the animated gif problem is still there and was not the first time round
before I upgraded to 5.01.

What has happened to my PC? Please can anyone help me out here cause it's
doing my head in now :-(

Fingers crossed...

Hi Gazza,

Go to IE tools/internet options/multimedia and make sure that play animations is turned on.

Also, ensure that opening gifs is associated with Internet Explorer, and not a third party programme.

Sandi,

Thanks for your input... the play animations was flagged and I have
associated gifs with Internet Explorer. However this has made no difference
to the situation at all. Please can you help because not a single site
animates with gifs now.... All was fine until I downloaded IE 5.01 and
things have never been the same since....even after formatting and starting
again without that version.

Same goes for me! All was well before 5.01 and since then, no animated gifs
on live webpages. File associations are all set to open with IExplore, and
the gifs will only animate from an html file resident on the computer.
These gifs persistantly open in MS Photo Editor - has this problem been
caused by Office 2000?

WHAT?!?!?!?!?!?!?

GIFs should be associated to whatever application the user wants and this
should not affect IE's display of GIF images.

FWIW, on one PC I have GIF associated to Corel PhotoPaint and IE 5.01
animates them. Another has GIF associated to IE 5.01 and it does not animate
them. So there goes your "theory".

DO NOT tell users to change their associations because IE5.01 doesn't behave
properly. This is *EXTREMELY* poor advice.

I write code for a living and I would be embarrassed and ashamed if I had to
tell a client to change his associations for my software to work.

GIFs will open is whatever application a user wants them to and it isn't
"wrong" to associate them to any particular app (unless we're talking about
NotePad).

There is a problem with IE5.01 here as most people in this thread had no
problems with 5.0 (me included) and the 5.01 upgrade likely caused this
problem.

Please try to determine the actual cause of an error (maybe discuss this
with the IE team...) before telling people to change their personal
customised settings.

Dale.

David....it's not Office 2000 because before I upgraded to IE 5.01 I had
Office 2000 and Win98 SE installed and all was well. It has something to do
with that new version of IE.... why oh why did I not just stay clear of it.

Can someone from Microsoft please look into this as there is obviously a bug
or two in IE 5.01.

David,

If the gif is opening using Photo Editor then the association is wrong.

Select a gif, hold down the shift key and right click. Select open with. Choose Internet Explorer, put a check box in the always open using the programme box and ok.

This will associate gifs with internet explorer again.

Go to start/run and type:

regsvr32.exe /i shdocvw.dll {hit enter}
regsvr32.exe /i shdoc401.dll {hit enter}

After a wait you will get a *succeeded* dialogue box.

Click ok, reboot and see if things are fixed.

Go to windows/downloaded programme files and check for damaged java classes.

Update to the latest java vm and scripting engines -

http://www.microsoft.com/msdownload/vbscript/scripting.asp
http://microsoft.com/java

If it still ain't fixed (make sure you reboot your system before checking to see if things are fixed) - let's get desperate ...

Type start/run:

regsvr32 /i occache.dll

Again Sandi thanks for getting back to me on this. I hope you and your team
have got your thinking caps on because I did everything you mentioned above
and it is still the same. It seems more than obvious that something is
dormant on my PC even after the format since I did the upgrade to IE 5.01. I
do not know what the bug is in that upgrade but it has screwed me and many
others by the sounds of things.

Is there anything else that you can suggest?

I have also associated with several different programs and to no avail. This
is really starting to bug me now (no pun intended).

Help!

Hey Gazza,

Thanks for your patience.

Go to IE tools/internet options/programs and click the button to set IE back to all its default settings. I've seen that fix some pretty weird problems in my time.

You can also try the Internet Explorer repair tool at control panel/add and remove programmes.

Or, you can nuke the .gif association completely. Go to my computer/view/folder options/file types. Scroll down to gif and delete it. Reboot. Then find any gif, right click/open with and select internet explorer.

Dale,

It is not a "theory". The advice has worked many times, including on my own machines. But all machines are different and sometimes you need to dig deeper to find the problem.

If the problem has occurred for you just since installing 5.01, try removing and reinstalling (perhaps you have a corrupted download). Try going to IE tools/internet options/programs and using the button to restore all default settings. Run Regclean 4 a few times - try running the repair tool. Things can sometimes go wrong with installs, and I would be interested to see the ratio of successful to corrupt installs, and the ratio of machines still running ani gifs compared to the machines that don't. Your problem is not a symptom of a basic insufficiency in IE5.01 or the problem would be flooding the newsgroups.

Open regedit.exe and navigate to:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.jpg (there is a dot before jpg)
For Content Type it should say "image/jpeg"
Do the same for .jpe and .jpeg

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.gif (don't forget the dot)
For Content Type it should say "image/gif"

For the information of all following this thread, animated GIFs are graphic files that contain more than one separate picture. Some Web browsers can display each of the separate pictures in turn, one right after another, to give the effect of animation. This is a special feature of the GIF 89a file format; many other graphics formats do not allow multiple pictures in the same file.

In addition, some types of animated GIF files are "Multi-Imaged" GIFs. They use a different looping structure than other GIF files, called "Multi-Framed" GIFs. The Multi-Imaged GIF uses a LOOP command. The LOOP command is not recognized when the GIF is used in Office or Microsoft Internet Explorer 5 which means the animated .gif will run at a faster rate when viewed in Office than when viewed in IE5.

When animated gifs are opened in certain programmes, they can be converted into an embedded image, and all animated GIF information is lost. Paint Shop Pro is a classic example of a programme that can cripple animated gifs.

Finally, the GIF graphics import filter used by some programmes to import an animated GIFs strip away all but the first frame of the graphic. Even if later viewed in HTML (IE) , there is no way to play back that animated GIF, because the animated GIF has already been converted into a static single frame GIF image.

Animated gifs can be disabled by associating gifs with a programme that do not support them.

But then again as a programmer, I am sure you know all this.

FWIW, Corel PhotoPaint 8.0 supports animated .gifs - allowing adjustment of frame rates etc., so the fact that animated gifs work when associated with this programme is a red herring.

Please do not insult my intelligence because I cannot solve all problems for all people. My advice is good, but I am not a miracle worker, and I take offence at your suggestion that we are do not try to determine the cause of errors.

======================================

Hello again,

Can I just clear something up that might be confusing the issue. I no longer
have version 5.01 on my machine. Since that upgrade I have formatted and
installed Win98 SE back on, which has 5.0 built into it. So I would have
thought that if I have formatted and my machine is set back as it was before
the upgrade was ever done, then animated gifs would work (wrong).

I have reset back to defaults and and removed the gif assosiation and
rebooted and associated with IE, and yes you guessed it, gif's are still not
animating on web pages. I can not repair IE5 from add/remove because it was
installed when Win98 SE was put on, so that option is not there.

This is getting really annoying now...and no matter what I do it will not
correct it. All was fine until that blasted upgrade was downloaded, I wish I
had left the bloody thing alone now :-(

So Sandi please can you wave that magic wand of yours and come up with the
solution to this problem?

Thanks for your time it is much appreciated.
