How to stop redirecting to MSN?

I am using IE 5.0. How do you get it to stop redirecting to MSN when
it can't find a URL that I typed in? For example, it presently goes
to something like....

http://auto.search.msn.com/results.asp?cfg=DNSERROR&v= <snip>

Is there a setting to stop this, because if there is, it is very well
hidden.

There are 3 locations in the registry that you can change. The below
settings would change msn to google to be your default search engine.

to Google? I don't see MSN specified in any of the browser settings.

Now this is my favourite question ... and the answer is .... go to IE
tools\internet options\general {languages}. Make sure that English (US) is
installed, and that it is at the top of your list. This will expand your
search options remarkably.

Windows 98 users can go to this link and set a specific search engine
(scroll to the bottom of the page). There is a disclaimer as follows:
WARNING: URLs that are not designed for the search bar will not work
properly.

If I understand this page correctly, for IE 5 on Win 98, I need to
modify the registry. Is that the short version?

Jim,

Open the search pane, select customise. For the autosearch option choose
something other than MSN. Or, just go to IE tools, internet options,
advanced and turn off 'search from the addressbar'.
