Hello, I am getting repeated error messages when running CHKDSK /V on my
WinXP Home SP2 system:

Detected minor inconsistencies on the drive. This is not a corruption.
CHKDSK is verifying security descriptors (stage 3 of 3)...
Cleaning up 1 unused index entries from index $SII of file 9.
Cleaning up 1 unused index entries from index $SDH of file 9.
Cleaning up 1 unused security descriptors.
Security descriptor verification completed.

This symptom is almost exactly the same as described in Microsoft Knowledge
Base Article 255008, BUT this article refers to a problem with Win2000, said
to have been fixed in Win2000 SP1.

I haven't been able to find any references to this sort of problem in WinXP.

Can anyone help out here?

Thanks

can you try booting off the winxp disc and using chkdsk /f /r? it could be
that your hard drive is defective or failing. possibly you could have a
malicious program(virus, worm, trojan, etc.). use a virus scanner and scan
for all those programs on the C: drive

Hi Compgeek-

Thanks for your response- yes, I've checked all the partitions on the disk
with CHKDSK /R run from the recovery console after booting from the WinXP
disk and it passes all tests, no bad sectors or other defects detected other
than what I mentioned in my original mesage.

To eliminate disk errors I've actually copied the whole system onto a
different disk and the problem remains. I've used manufacturer's software
too, to do full hardware tests on the disks and they check out OK.

I run Norton antivirus, updated once or twice weekly, with Auto-Protect
enabled, and I've done full system scans to try and pick up any virus that
may be giving me this problem, however nothing shows up.

I've also run the system file checker but this hasn't afected the current
behaviour.

Just to put things in context with a bit of historical info, the computer
did display some erratic behaviour late in December- there were whole
clutches of disk errors detected for a few days, and CHKDSK would kick in on
boot. I had some "registry corrupted- repaired with backup" and "system file
corrupt" messages, and had to use the WinXP disk to get things going again.
However this appears to be history now, the system runs fine and solid, and
checks out error free with any diagnostic utility I try... except for the
minor problems noted with the security descriptors.

So, I'm continuing with daily system backups forsafety and regular checks
with CHKDSK, and hoping I can maybe identify what's going on. I can't help
feeling the eerie similarity with that Knowledge Base article 255008 should
give a clue.

I guess I might need to use up one of my free referrals to Microsoft support!

Any other suggestions gratefully received!

All the Best
