I am trying to set up a DFS root on a win2003 server which
I had done once before. Now I am getting an error message
that says:
"The following error occurred while creating DFS roon on
server myfileserver: The request is not supported."

Looking up this error on the knowledge base, it says I
already have a dfs root on this server, which I don't any
longer. So, I am at a loss on what to do next.

Any suggestions are appreciated.

I recently got this as well and found that the DFS root I thought I deleted
didn't fully go away. I can't detail how to clean up after this but there
are cleaning option in the command line dfs management tool (dfsutil or
something like that). In my case I rebooted my 2 W2K3 AD servers since their
only test servers anyway. After that the problem went away.

For creating a new root on W2K3 DFS Standard server, you first need to the
root hosted previously on it as W2K3 Standard server supports only 1 DFS
root on it (W2K3 enterprise server support multiple roots on it). You can
remove the DFS root using DFSGUI.msc (GUI Admin tool) or dfsutil.exe in
normal scenarios.
If for any reason you didn't do the proper removal of this root from this
server then you can use dfsutil.exe to do cleanups. See options '/clean' and
'/unmapftroot' of dfsutil.exe. These are disaster-recovery options for DFS
root.
If this is domain-based DFS root, you need to execute both of these options.
If it is standalone DFS root you just need to execute '/clean' option.

You can get latest dfsutil.exe from

It seems like you haven't removed the previous DFS root from this machine
properly. How did you remove the previous root from this machine?
Now, you can cleanup the root using dfsutil.exe (support/reskit tool).
Please cleanup the DFS root on this machine using 'dfsutil.exe /unmap...'
and 'dfsutil.exe /clean...' options.
