Nevertheless the expertise needed to get BITS repaired may not be here
(in the WU NG). ; )

Try using bitsadmin? E.g. in a cmd window enter:

bitsadmin /util /version /verbose

What happens? Compare with poster John Riehl's results?

The following KB article might apply to this case:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/940520. After rebooting the system, re-enable
the BITS service.

If you continue to see anything mal-functioning after following the steps,
please reply to this post and we will try to troubleshoot the issue further.

Thanks, I happened to find the solution this morning through the same article
and was hoping to find all the postings where I aksed for help on this
issue/question. Guess I missed this one. DOH!!!

But all is good now... thanks again for keeping me posted though... and just
to think, I was getting ready to reload my OS in the next day or so.

hI
i am having the BITS stopped working and Windows Host services stopped
working error
I tried the steps mentioned on this link
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/940520
but when i run the file it says that i do not require this step.

I have the following error in the logs

State your IE version and full Windows version (e.g., Vista; Vista SP1;
