I just noticed that I have a trace format environment path set on a
relatively new system, and I have never used any of the trace formatting
tools on this system.

I opened a command prompt, typed "set", and noticed this entry:
TRACE_FORMAT_SEARCH_PATH=\\NTREL202.ntdev.corp.microsoft.com\34FB5F65-FFEB-4B61-BF0E-A6A76C450FAA\TraceFormat

The trace format path is typically used by trace formatting tools such as
tracefmt.exe, see http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms797226.aspx

If you do a search on the internet for "NTREL202.ntdev.corp.microsoft.com",
you will find many hits, but all are inderect hits where users include their
environment variables on the page.

This indicates that there are lots of other systems out there with the same
environment variable set.

Anybody have any idea which application sets this variable, since it points
to a Microsoft server, I assume it is a Microsoft application?

Hello Pieter

TRACE_FORMAT_SEARCH_PATH is an environment variable used by tracefmt, a
tool of Window Driver Kit (WDK). The newsgroup
microsoft.public.development.device.drivers is dedicated to WDK issues. I
suggest your posting this question in that newsgroup. The reason why we
recommend posting appropriately is that you will get the most qualified
pool of respondents, and other partners who the newsgroups regularly can
either share their knowledge or learn from your interaction. Thank you for
your understanding.

Happy New Year!

Ok thanks, by the way, I think the offending product is Windows Live
Messenger Beta.
