The recent installation of broadband on my old Windows 98 computer has
indicated that a Windows file "wsock32.dll" is missing or corrupted. There
appears to be no virus on the system and I can't extract the file from my W98
CD. When I use it, I get a message telling me "the file cannot be found".

Can anyone please tell me if it is possible to download the file from
Microsoft as I cannot find it on their download site. If not because 98 is no
longer supported, can I find it somewhere else?

Hello Alan

Thanks for the reply. I have three discs as follows:-
1) Windows 98
2)Windows 98 Restore Pack
3)Training and reference suite.

I tried 2) but the first message says that the next step will clear my
hardrive and reinstall 98 so I tried 1) as follows:- Start, Run, type sfc
then OK, then type in wsock32.dll and click Start. I insert the cd (no cabs
show). Where it says "Extract from" I type D:\win98 (D being the CD ROM drive
the disc was in,
and in Destination, I type C:\windows\system then OK. Then I get the nessage
"File was not found. Verify that you have selected the correct Restore From
Location".

You are losing me.
Just open the .cab file I suggested and extract it from 1) (your Win98
disk.)
2) and 3) are not relevant

If you want to use SFC, then you seem to have completely different
prompts, though I have Win98SE.

Start, Run, type sfc does not give me the option of "OK".
It gives me the option of "Scan for altered files" or "Extract one
file from the installation disk". If I select the latter and type in
wsock32.dll, then I have to press Start, not OK.
I select D:\WIN98 in "Restore from:" from the dropdown box. (It
doesn't say "Extract from:" in mine)
I don't see "Destination", I see "Save file in:" and
"C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM" is already filled in. I don't have to type it.

Yes Alan, I have Win 98 not SE and my prompts are different. I cannot find
any reference to "Cabs" anywhere on the CD. It has a Browse This CD option
and I can find no reference at all to Cabs or any dll's. That's why I was
hoping to find winsock on Microsoft.

Precopy1.cab is in the Win8 CD as well as the Win98 SE CD.
It is D:\Win98\Precopy1.cab
Ensure you have extensions showing if you do not see the .cab part.

That didn't work either but in the mean time I found a web page,
www.claymania.com/wsock32-extraction.html, which gave a free download of
clean copy of the file. I have now installed this but it has made no
difference. The error message still pops up. Any other ideas please?

What is the exact, complete message that you are getting, and when in the
process does it appear?

What did you do to 'install' the new copy of the DLL?

Have you confirmed that your broadband installation is compatible with your
operating system? Most manufacturers are not providing support for Windows
98.

> Hello Jeff

The message reads "Fatal Exception". Tthen in Details it says "c06d007eH in
module SENS.DLL at 0167:6010857t wsock32.dll file is missing".

The message pops up after I have turned the computer on and clicked the
Speedtouch modem shortcut to activate the line. If I just click cancel or the
X in the corner, the message disappears and the broadband is connected and
works fine. It's just that the message is irritating and I wonder if the dll
might be needed for other things.

I downloaded a copy of wsock32.dll on to the desk top then double clicked it
to install but it seems to have made no difference. I couldn't extract it
from My Windows CD

wsock32.dll doesn't need to be installed - it simply needs to be copied to
the System folder, and any programs that need it should find it there.

The full message doesn't give any clues to the problem - SENS.DLL is simply
reporting an error that has occurred somewhere else. It might be that the
wsock32.dll file is damaged rather than missing, so replacing it may help.
