I have a win98se machine that I bought new from gateway. I recently upgraded
the old intel board to a suitable asus p3v4x board. Before I did I
accidently erased the hd drive. I fdisked and formatted it. Reinstalled
98se and downloaded many updates from microsoft. I thought I should defrag
the hd and that caused the problem. It wouldn't boot so I fdisked, formatted
and reinstalled again. Now it won't get past the splash screen! It says I
have to many configsys and some others running and to stop them. If I press
a key it reboots and does the same thing. If I don't it shuts down. I am at
a total loss here. I have a new win7 emachines so this 98 one is going to be
just for storing pics and vids of my nephew and music. Any ideas what went
wrong? Should I flash the bios? The bios works the same it sees the hd,
cdrom and floppy. The 98 cd is all that I used to get it running last time.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Do not flash the bios!
And you needed not to erased the old hd drive first

http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/mainboards/display/asus-p3v4x.html

Windows 98 do not have the ASUSP3V4X Drive on win98 CD!
We need to know first so we can help?
Do you have and I Hope you have win98 Drive on a CD software by ASUS>>>> if
not go to ASUS website
and Download the Software drives all the mainboard. Like the Video, Audio,
network adapters Drives for win98 if they have them!

Do that first Ok
if not you do not have the Drives for the ASUSP3V4X mainboard for windows 98
After installing windows with not ASUSP mainboard Drives you will not be
able to storing pics and vides or music for your nephew!

So do you have the Drives Yes or No?

Reformat and install again. If that doesn't help or isn't practical, please
repost with more information, including the exact error messages being
displayed.
