When I do a web search with Alta Vista, I can only display up to 80 hits (in
sets of 10 hits each) even though it says more matches have been
found --like a few hundred. How does one display matches past the first 80?
After the 80th match is displayed, the <next> selection option at the bottom
of
the list goes away.
Thanks,
Al

Hmm, I just got over 200. I wonder what we are doing differently.

I just went to www.altavista.com, searched on the word "sex" (do you know a
better way to get a lot of hits?<g>), was informed there were 14,184,780
pages found, 10 were displayed, at least 20 successor pages were shown at
the bottom, I clicked on page 20, and it came up immediately with items
191-200.

You have checked them all, have you? :-)

Perhaps a matter of cookies, java, scripting or ActiveX?

2 cents from

Same glitch with netscape 4.76 and IE 5.0, tried advanced search, same
problem, could only access 200 pages. Google works fine. Such can be the
problem with propritary web authoring.

Yep, you're right.

BTW: I found NS 4.75 far more stable than 4.76

Uh, is that a glitch? I thought the 200 was great! I certainly didn't expect
to see all 1.4 million listings!

I just tried the same thing -- got the 80 hits again and after looking at #
80, the only choices left were <previous>. This is going to drive me
crazy(er)!

Just on a crazy hunch: Empty your Temporary Internet Files folder, clear out
your cookies, empty your History, reboot, and try it again.

When I went directly to the web site as you did, I also had 20 pages of hits
offered. However, when I just use search off the IE5 menu, I only get 8
pages of hits offered.

Ah, that's the difference!

Then it sounds like it's a limitation in IE.

BTW, did you really look at every one of the 800 hits you got?

In any case, just go to AltaVista directly if you need the larger
capabilities. I never search a specific search engine from the browser's
search page -- I either just use the ? feature in the Address bar, or go to
a search engine's actual page.

BTW -- just in case anyone is interested -- my favorite search engine these
days is a new one called eXactbot. You can get there from the obvious
www.exactbot.com. (I keep a link to it on the Search page of my web site
also.) The hits from this one little search engine are few -- smaller than
you probably want -- *but*, after searching, you are one click away from
auto-launching the same search in AltaVista, DejaNews, Excite, GO Network,
HotBot, Lycos, WebCrawler and/or Yahoo. (No need to retype your query -- it
feeds it right into their search engine and is very fast.) (No, I'm not an
owner -- though a friend of mine is. It just happens to be the best thing of
its kind that I've seen lately. Saves my loads of time.)

With 4.75 I had to copy and paste over to IE a lot more for certain web pages.
I have heard of problems with newsgroups, but certain maintenance
procedures instituted during use of 4.75 seem to work well with 4.76.
Oh yes, this is a ms newsgroup, may lightening strike me for such a discussion.

Way too slow, I would have already found what I am looking for on google.

Well, I certainly can't complain about Google -- since they are the single
highest source of nondirect hits to my own site! And they seem to be doing a
great job.

My main reason for liking eXactbot is the extreme flexibility of having my
results from 8 distinct leading search engines one click away. Almost all of
my searching is done simply from the address bar of IE, not through a
separate engine at all -- so by the time I want to head for a search site,
it's because I have a tough topic that may take some serious research.
That's when having 8 launches literally one click from each other (well, one
Back and one click) really pays off.

BTW, the DejaNews link on eXactbot actually goes to Google, now that Google
acquired them. I'll have to recommend they change the label.
