Correct. Even if you could find a way to trick it, you would be running some
serious risks of compromising your system by installing an earlier version
of an OS over a later version.

Untrue. It would take many hundreds of files.
I can think of a couple I'd try if pressed -- like WIN.COM -- but (a) I
don't know if that would work, (b) it is less likely to work in 98 than it
would have in 95, and (c) as mentioned above, if it *does* work, you are
running a serious risk of getting a pretty junked up operating system.

I see that you have two options. One is to reformat the hard drive (or at
least delete Windows off of it) and start fresh. The other is to bring up
the individual problems you are having in SE on this newsgroup and let us
help you solve them. Is it anything more than the shutdown bug? Have you
really tried everything?
For SE shutdown bug resolution, see:

For tips on clean reinstalliing Windows 98 (but without suggestions on
installing it over an existing SE setup) see

2) about what I already tried :
- updated BIOS
- updated Matrox drivers
- updated Adaptec drivers
- installed Microsoft SE shutting down supplement several times,
including while disabling all TSR
- disabled PnP
- disabled PCI bus IRQ steering
- added lines to config.sys
- verified exit sound file
- verified internal speaker
Last things I can outline : while attempting to shutdown,
the screen is flashing twice an - sometimes - Read OK is
lighting on my SCSI CD Recorder...
Another strange thing that happened :
when I installed Win98SE for the first time, it did not
recognize my SCSI tape drive and put a ? in the device
manager list. Then, I deleted this entry and restarted
Windows. This time, the hardware was recognized as "tape drive"
with an (outdated ?) 1996 driver.
Can't say more.
Thanks again.
Jack
Eventually I found out it was the network card (which is not used), and
disabling it made it shutdown.
