I keep getting numerous fatal exception errors when Windows tries to run the
VxD VMM module during start-up.

The exact message is "Fatal Exception Error OE at 0028:C0273F54 in VxD
VMM(06)+00001F54"

Alteratively, if the machine does start, then it can freeze at any moment
for no apparent reason OR the screen may display a multi-coloured block
about 1" square (it looks like a row of those giant statues on Easter
Island!).

Does anybody know what the problem might be. Decreasing or disabling the
graphics accelerator functions helps, but does not eliminate the problem.
Neither does using any of the Win98 recommened video drivers.

I am running a P133 on a standard PCI board with 80MB EDO ram. Attached is
a Diamond 3240 PCI graphics card (2MB), Taxan 580LR+ monitor, AWE32 sound
card, Seagate HDD (x2 ), Sony+Panasonic CDRoms and 56K USR modem.

Currently the Diamond card is being driven by a Diamond GT driver (used
successfully sin '96 in Win95), but InControl tools is not loaded. The
Win98 drivers are much less stable than this one (except the S3 968 - but I
don't want to run a 2MB card at 640x480x16)

This is a certain sign of corrupt registry (vmm(06) and the ability to
recover after the error). Run "scanreg /fix" from *DOS* and/or try Norton
Utilities and/or Nuts&Bolts 98, or just format your disk. (Works for me!)
