during startup I get this message:

Cannot find a device file that may be needed to run
Windows or a Windows application

The Windows registry or SYSTEM.INI file refers to
this device file, but the device file no longer exists

If you deleted this file on purpose, try uninstalling the associated
application using its uninstall or setup program
If you still want to use the application associated with
this device file, try reinstalling that application to replace
the missing file

vserver.vxd
Press a key to continue

This is a new Windows 98 installation and I don't recall removing any
programs from the machine. What can I do?

File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks is the 32-bit,
protected-mode Windows 98 SMB server (Vserver.vxd) that supports all
networking products that use the SMB file-sharing protocol, including
Windows for Workgroups, Windows NT, LAN Manager, Samba, IBM LAN Server,
IBM OS/2 Warp Server, and DIGITAL PATHWORKS 32. Windows 98 enhances the
features of Windows for Workgroups peer services by providing
administrative control over whether peer sharing services are enabled,
by adding user-based security capabilities, and by supporting long file
names.

If you don't need it, find and delete the reference in system.ini by
doing a find in sysedit.exe or in the registry using regedit.exe

Run SFC.EXE via Start > Run and extract a copy of the VSERVER.VXD from
the Windows 98-CD. As the source dir use the WIN98 dir on the CD.

I tried removing vserver keys from regedit - now I don't get the message
anymore, but...

When I restart, my computer come up with a screen telling me it has
found new hardware and for me to tell it where to get the drivers for
this "new" hardware. I haven't installed any new hardware. The
hardware it is looking for is unknown, so I can't find what drivers it
wants.

Did I do something wrong? How can this be fixed?
