Dulpication of shortcut icons on Desktop

Can anyone help please, following a recent installation of Windows 98 (after
a PC crash required a rebuild) I have two icons for every shortcut on my
desktop. If I delete one the other doesn't work and I have to restore from
the recycling bin. I have scouted through the Microsoft website and FAQ's on
"desktop" without finding this problem. Does anyone know what to do to
remedy the problem, please email, thanks.
