Whenever my Win98 system goes into screensaver mode, the
system locks up. When I Cntl-Alt-Del, I see that
MSGSVR32.EXE is not responding. I end up having to
reboot. Any idea what is causing this?

Thx. Tom

Hi Tom,

Msgsrv32.exe is the messenger file, and it's not the problem. This file carries instructions from one part of your machine to another. It is reported as "not responding" because one of two things has happened:

1) A program sent an invalid instruction or
2) A program failed to respond to or correctly interpret an instruction.

The tough part is figuring out "Which program?". Begin by limiting the number of applications you run at startup, including your Anti-virus program (frequently one of the worst offenders with some of the more widely recognized commercial products). Slowly increase the numbers over a period of days until the errors start to reoccur. This should give you some idea of what is causing the problem.

Once you know what is causing it, addressing it may be a bit easier. This may help:

Rick, Thanks for advice. I've started to pull some
of the programs I have open and will continue to work
through the process.

As another avenue, how would I find out which other
files / programs MSGSRV32.EXE is referencing (particularly
when the screensaver kicks in) which may give me another
lead? For example, I recently updated the drivers for my
CD-RW drive which users PlextorManager2000 for creating
CD's. I'm curious if I may have replaced one of the
files that MSGSVR32.EXE is referencing.

Thanks for the help. Tom

The 3D screensavers are problematic--have you tried some of the others? It may prove nearly impossible to find out why the screensaver is causing the PC to freeze. I would set the screensaver to none and use power management to shut down the monitor after a given period (say 15 minutes).

Try downloading/installing the latest version (9.0) of
DirectX from Microsoft @www.microsoft.com/directx/

This solved my problem with the 3D ScreenSavers.
