Just recently whenever I right click on a desktop icon or a
file in windows explorer I get an illegal operation
message. The same thing happens if I left click to select
a file and press DEL. I can right click successfully on My
Computer, Recycle Bin, and My Documents. Double-clicking
on the problem desktop icons, programs or files in windows
explorer causes the normally expected results and no error
message. Where should I begin to look for the cause?
There has been no recent software installations or system
modifications. If I am posting in the wrong place, please
direect me to the proper location. Thanks.

It might be helpful if you post the *exact* error message you are
getting--if there is a details button, post that message--the registers
are not required. Absent this information, I'd guess that it is a
registry glitch. If this problem is less than five days old, restore a
copy of the registry that predates the onset of the problem and see if
that helps. The five-day limit assumes that the computer is booted
every day. If it is not booted every day, you may have an old enough
registry backup that you can use even though more than five days have
elapsed.

On the Start Menu, select Shut Down and Restart in MSDOS Mode. At the
Windows prompt, type: scanreg /restore and hit enter (note the
space before the /). Once the registry restore screen appears, select
the date of the registry that you wish to restore by highlighting it and
then click enter. If you see a registry named: Rbbad.cab, that is a
copy of the registry that has already been restored.

The message was that "Explorer caused an invalid page fault
in Module unknown" Also, unfortunately, it has been more
than 5 reboots since the problem popped up.

If you run a search on the MS Knowledge Base (see signature) using the
error message, there are quite a few articles that contain it; however,
none describe the problem as being caused by a right click. Since you
don't have a copy of the registry that you can restore, I suggest that
you try to figure out what changed on your system about the time that
the problem started. If you added software or hardware, reverse the
changes. You can also run SFC to see what it says but be careful and
read this article first:
