Hello all,
Maybe someone has heard of this problem I'm having with
Windows 98 SE? My system specs: Dell Pentium 3, 450
128 ram 9.1 gb hardrive. Voodoo 3, Internet explorer 5.5 ..
These 3 system files - d3dpmesh.dll 01/08/99
d3drm.dll 01/08/99
d3dxof.dll 01/08/99
Keep replacing my original files of the same names
dated 04/23/99... Everytime I put the originals back dated
04/23/99.. Within a day or two they get replaced by the 01/08/99
files. No matter how many times I put back the originals the dates
of the older ones keep coming back.. When I check the version of
the older dated files, they are the same version as the newer dated
files. However even though they are the same version, the sizes are
different. I have scanned for possible viruses, everything checks out
fine. I've even made these 3 files "read only" and they were still
replaced! As far as I can tell the computer works fine with the older
files, but I have no idea why this would keep happening..
Can anyone shed some light on this problem I'm having?

What problem are you having with the computer with these three files
installed? If none after a week of use, I'd update the sfc.exe data base
and not worry about it.

From the Troubleshooting section of
http://www.speedguide.net/Windows/win_bugs.shtml
DLLs replaced by Windows '98
Microsoft's new OS seems to disable third party, newer DLLs in favor of
older, baseline MS versions. The Windows setup routine detects newer
DLLs ( which usually originate with MS and aredistributed to competitors
for use with its products ), and moves them to another folder,
installing earlier MS versions.

To fix some of your programs, relying on the newer DLLs, after upgrading
check the Version Conflict Manager, which is buried deep into Windows,
and usually not found by users. The Setup does not mention the replaced
DLLs either. To find the replaced DLLs, click Start, Programs,
Accessories, System Tools, System Information, Tools, Version Conflict
Manager
