I installed a peer to peer and it works great except for this one
application that is in dos. I've tried all the regular stuff with no
success. I'me extremely frustrated. Today I installed Microsoft Client
Software 3.0(might not be the full name) on the advice of a web site
with disastrous results. Three hours later I'me almost back to where I
started. How do I network this DOS application??

Hi,

There are a few points that you you probably are aware of:

- In W9x, the network is not available after a plain DOS boot. That was WfW
times...
- Combining the DOS Microsoft Client and the protected mode network support
is not supported.

The exact description of your problem (with any error messages) would help.
Tried to run the DOS application in a DOS box? That should usually work...

Thank You for responding to my dilema.
I have three networked computers. The DOS application is on #1. It runs
just fine in it's litte dos box, when done we re-enter gui environment.
After mapping a drive to the .exe file of the DOS application and
attempting to access we receive a error message that (#2 or #3)were
unable to (find/access) (eviron.dbf) which is the first file this DOS
application access's. I tried installing Microsoft Network Clients
3.0. It was supposed to allow me the access but instead changed my
drivers for my nic and video, setting me back.

Any ideas or help is very welcome!

Probably your application is incorrectly configured. Is this application
advertized as network enabled ?

Let's suppose it's installed in C:\MYAPP

On computer #2 or #3 it will probably appear like E:\MYAPP or even E:\
but the program still searches for C:\MYAPP\ENVIRON.DBF

Supposing the application can be installed to another drive (not C) there
may be a solution :

1. Uninstall the application.
2. Create C:\MYAPP
3. Add SUBST X: C:\MYAPP to the AUTOEXEC.BAT of #1
4. Reboot #1
5. Reinstall the application to X:\somewhere
6. Verify that the application works OK
7. Share C:\MYAPP on #1
8. Map drive X: of #2 and #3 to the share created in 7.
9. Use the application from X:\somewhere on #2 and #3

Replace X: with a drive letter that is currently not used on #1, #2 or #3

Your application may still not work or destroy your data if you attempt
to run it simultaneously from two computers. If that happens you must
purchase a network capable version.

BTW : do you own 3 licences for this application ? :)

In all my frustration and tunnel vision, I had forgot something
important. The dos app can be seen and loads throughout the network,
it's when you go to open the data that the error comes up that files
cannot be found and naming these files. I am told that this is a
network vers. of the program and was networked successfully prior to
this installation. Any thoughts?

It seems to be a clipper program
If so, the program must have an environ variable or setup to say the
default drive/directory
set thie default to the redirected unit/directory
h: or h:\myapp
where h: is the redirected drive on pc #2 and #3

In autoexec of pc #1 type

subst h: c:\

so you can access to local drive c: as c: or h:

this may run
