Router froze

Hi:

I have an SMC7004ABR 4-port router with 3 PCs connected to it downstream.
Upstream is a Surfboard SB4100 cable modem.

This router has been in use for about 3 weeks. No problems at all. However, this
morning when I got ready to power up one of the computers I noticed that the
cable modem amber Activity light was not flickering at all. Usually there is
some flickering even when no computers are powered up. The green Power, Receive,
Send, and Online lights were all on rock solid with no flickering.

After powering up the computer I was unable to access the internet or to use my
email program.

So I talked to a technician from my Earthlink ISP. I had already tried powering
down both the cable modem and the PC - which didn't help. He suggested powering
down the router. I did that, and after powering the router back up, everything
was back to normal.

Why would a router freeze up like this? I downloaded what I think is the latest
firmware before installing the router, version 1.40.018.

We did have some thunderstorms during the night. Maybe that had something to do
with it, although electrical power was normal when I woke up. The Earthlink
technician recommended that I get a UPS.

Any ideas or suggestions? Thanks.

Papa,
I would chalk it up to a possible power outage that may have thrown your
modem and router out of sync. AFAIK the way to reset them is shutdown
router, then modem, wait about 1 min., restart modem, then router. I use a
UPS and it keeps power on for up to 20 mins. giving me time to save files I
am working on and shutdown, it also has surge protection. There are many now
which keep power on longer. I guess you can be happy that you didn't wake up
to something completely fried due to a spike. There are many times total
power has gone out for hrs here and so far I've been lucky enough not to
have problems.

Hi Brian.

Thanks for your insights. As usual your response was right on the button.

Although lengthy power outages are pretty rare around here, power spikes are
always a risk - so next week I'll be shopping for a UPS. A friend recommended an
APC model BK350, and I'll be taking a look at the specs for it.

Regards.

Papa,
I use the BK650MC although I don't see why the 350 wouldn't work for you at
half the cost. You can get all the info on all their Back-UPS products at:
