Can anyone offer any advice in terms of what brands or types to
buy; or any advice, warnings, or tips on how to go about this?
The computers are both on Win98 and will be about 50 to 100 feet
apart in separate rooms. I'm going to cable modem for my
internet connection.
Thanks,
bjanko

Others use Wingate, Win98 SE with ICS, etc. for sharing the internet
connection. Its your choice.
I also recommend ZoneAlarm for a personal firewall. Its free...
www.sybergen.com for SyGate information and a free trial version.
www.zonelabs.com for ZoneAlarm information and download.
Good luck...

I run ZA 2.1.25 on my SyGate 3.11 (Build 560) box in "High" security
mode on the internet side. I have ZA set for "Low" on my local LAN side.
I also disabled the SyGate "Enable Enhanced Security" setting, ie.
UNCHECK the checkbox, in the SyGate manager configuration window.
Traffic from my private home LAN passes freely through the SyGate server
as advertised. Likewise, traffic from the SyGate server box can access
the internet. I simply had to tell ZA to allow SyGate to access the
internet. I can also do two-way audio/video NetMeeting 3.01 (4.4.3388)
conferences from a client machine on my home LAN. The only stipulation
is that I must initiate the call. Remote hosts can not call into the
client. On the server, NetMeeting can call or receive calls, again with
ZA in "High" security mode. I did have to tell ZA to let NetMeeting act
as a "server". I have NO other programs configured as servers as far as
ZA is concerned.
The "Shields-Up" site reports all ports as "Stealth". I have not tried
the "Whacker Hacker" site yet. I also can not ping my home ZA host from
the internet, confirming the "Shields-Up" report.

I found, early on, that all you need to do is to install a NIC in each
machine and configure them according to manufacturer specs. Then you need
only a CROSS OVER CABLE. This cable is wired in such a way as to accomodate
only 2 computers and no more. Consequently, you are not really networking
but you are SHARING resources between 2 computers. Consequently again, you
do not need a hub!!!
Just set up networking on the individual systems the same way you would
under any other NETWORKING conditions and you're on your way!
Of course, under WIN98 on 2 systems you can also log onto the net on a
single modem simultaneously. Some cable systems will allow 2 systems but no
more without additional cost.
Hope this was helpful!
