Can anybody help me? I have a laptop with Win98 and a
desktop with WinXP. I want to network the two together
and have a cross-over cable between the two machines,
using the LAN ports. I only need to share the
files/printer - the sharing of the internet connection is
not required. I don't seem to be able to see the 2nd
machine on either the laptop or desktop, so must be doing
something wrong. Please help (in plain english). Thanks.

Run XP's Network Setup Wizard on both computers. It will make all of
the necessary network settings:

XP ICS - Starting the Network Setup Wizard

If that doesn't get everything working, try these tips:

1. Permanently disable XP's built-in Internet Connection Firewall on
the local area network connection -- it's for use only on a direct
modem connection to the Internet. Disable and un-install all other
firewalls while troubleshooting. Details here:

Windows XP Internet Connection Firewall

2. Make sure that NetBIOS over TCP/IP is enabled on both computers.
Details here:

Enable NetBIOS Over TCP/IP (NetBT)
