I have absolutely no sound on my computer because a program unistall
removed all my standard audio drivers. Now whenever I restart windows,
the auto-detection programs says that I need PCI Multimedia Audio
device drivers.
I downloaded the drivers' zip file for windows 98 and extracted
them to a directory I created. Then I go to control panel, add new
hardware, and then when it comes time to point the directory where the
drivers are at I point it to the one I created but windows says it
didn't find the right drivers.
I have Windows 98 SE and don't know if this has anything to do
with this but I could only find the drivers under the description "for
Win 98"
I tried to search for the PCI Multimedia Audio device drivers FOR
Win 98 SE but couldn't it. Only the drivers I already have, under the
description "for Win98"

Appreciate if someone could help. Thanks

Look at the files you downloaded--is there an .inf file or is there an
.exe file? If an .exe, try double clicking it and see what happens.

There was "Sndvol32.exe" I clicked I ran it and the following window
popped

"There are no active mixer devices available. You may intall or
activate mixer devices from the Control Panel. This application will
now exit"

What do I do now?

That isn't a driver--it is a standard W98 file for volume control.

Find out what kind of a sound card you have and then search for the
right driver for it. As an option, you can try restoring the registry
if it hasn't been too long since you lost sound:

If this problem is less than five days old, restore a copy of the
registry that predates the onset of the problem and see if that helps.
The five-day limit assumes that the computer is booted every day. If it
is not booted every day, you may have an old enough registry backup that
you can use even though more than five days have elapsed.

On the Start Menu, select Shut Down and Restart in MSDOS Mode. At the
Windows prompt, type: scanreg /restore and hit enter (note the
space before the /). Once the registry restore screen appears, select
the date of the registry that you wish to restore by highlighting it and
then click enter. If you see a registry named: Rbbad.cab, that is a
copy of the registry that has already been restored.

Let me thank you before hand for replying to my posts, Ron. Thanks a
lot!

The registry restore didn't work. I have a laptop. How do I find out
which sound card I have. Also, I have been having problems with my
mouse driver (the yellow cricle with the exclamation in device
manager), so I need to look for new drivers for that as well.

Once again, thanks for your help.

Sorry, I don't do laptops (never worked on one so I am hesitant to
provide advice). Maybe someone else will jump in or perhaps you could
find info on the manufacturer's web site. With a desktop, I would
suggest popping open the case and taking a look--I suspect a laptop is
not that easy.
