It seems as if the mail file, outlook.pst, grows and grows like Topsy. If
you delete items in the hope of decreasing the size, it makes no
difference. Is there a way of compacting the file?

Try going to 'Tools|Services|Personal Folders|Properties' and clicking the
"Compact Now" button. Remember that you have to empty the Deleted Items
folder for your deleted items to be removed from the .PST file and free up
space.
