I am a pc tech and have installed cable modems on several pc's that can ping
an IP address but will not ping a domain name (www.yahoo.com for example).
Most of the time these pc's had or have AOL on them. Is there any way to
fix this problem without reinstalling the OS?? Thanks for the help in
advance... Tom.

Try rebuilding the Winsock2 registry key:

1. Un-install ICS (if installed).
2. Un-install Dial-Up Networking. Don't reboot.
3. Delete registry key HLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Winsock2
4. Re-install Dial-Up Networking. Reboot.
5. Re-install ICS (if desired).

You say you are a PC tech and you dont know how to sort this!!

If you can contact (ping) the IP address of the web site but not the actual
domain name there is a DNS problem.

Check that the DNS settings have been entered correctly.

If the PCs use AOL it may be slightly different as it uses its own dialling
software as far as I am aware.

If you still cannot connect, maybe trying reinstalling Dial Up Networking
(possibly) or recreate the DUN connections.

I assume you are using Win98SE

Lighten up. No one knows everything about PCs. No one know everything
about Win95/98/Me. It contains code written by people who have since died
and aren't communicating anymore. One of the first thing that goes when a
programmer is under a marketing deadline is documentation. There is
undocumented code in Windows that will never get fixed and sometimes even an
'expert' needs help. And then people go an add AOL on top. And it's a
surprise that someone gets confused?

If you read all the lines of code that make up Windows 9x, when you got done
you wouldn't remember what it says at the start.

Sorry. I normally write these sorts of things and just delete them without
sending, but I decided to send this one. No personal offense intended.

That makes getting scorched by Frank Saunders a rare "privilege".

Normally I write these things, chuckle to myself and delete them. Not
this time.

I have a very similar problem. It is clearly a DNS thing, since I can
ping various sites using the IP addresses and it works - so TCP/IP is
working. The unit is (read was) a Host for a four computer network
using ICS in Win98SE. However, recently about four days ago, it
quit talking to it's own DNS server...ie, I couldn't browse anything
or connect with anything that used a domain vs IP address with the
Host unit only! All the other worked fine (connecting thru the
Host!!). Iwas able to do your steps 1 thru 4, but still have the
problem. There must be a registry key elsewhere that's screwing it
up, since complete un-instal, remove key (in step 3 below) and
re-install won't get me there. Any other ideas???

Thanks
Jim

I finally got it working, thanks to chine...@my-deja.com's 17 Jan 01
post regarding the MSKB Q241344 info. That's what did it! I tried
Steve Winograd's post info several times, but it was the addl VXD keys
in the registry and deleting all the Winsock keys that did it.

THANKS TO ALL!
Jim
