Last night I installed IE5. I downloaded and updated/installed "successful".
Today I start my PC and I get the popup:
EXPLORER caused an invalid page fault in module EXPLORER.EXE at
015f:00401f31.
Nothing goes. CTRL-ALT-DEL gives me 2 options - shut / down restart.
I tried command prompt only - works. Replaced registry files with former
copies: no effect -same error:
I even tried the trick with replacing explorer with progman.exe in
system.ini - no success: SFC.EXE does not find anything wrong!
Anybody: What happened? - How can I solve it?
Any help greatly appreciated!
Thanks

I made the mistake of first installing IE5 and then, the next day,
installing a new set of drivers for my Diamond video card. Seems that the
Diamond driver install routine arbitrarily blows over Comctl32.dll and puts
the earlier version back on your system. The fix is to either reinstall IE5
or get a copy of the new DLL and put it back into your system folder.

Any more ideas I could try ? Is there a way to uninstall IE5 from the
"Command Prompt" ? May be to reload the registry from couple of days ago? -
What other system files would I have to replace?
Thanks for any help.

The Diamond install was even asking me about replacing newer versions of some
files--just like a REAL install program--and I didn't let it. Lot of
difference that made.

Do you have Cleansweep installed? If so, you need to disable the startup of
CSINJECT.EXE using Win98's config mgr. It will boot fine after that. I'm using
CS version 4.2, but just bought Symantec's new System Works which comes with a
newer ver. 4.5. I'll see if that does any better when I install it today.
Almost everyone I've talked to who is getting this error has Cleansweep 4.2, or
earlier, installed.

In my case I got into the system again via command prompt only:
I had to replace "shdocvw.dll" in the <windows>\system directory with the
command "extract /a [cd-drive]:\win98\base4.cab shdocvw.dll /l
c:\windows\system" .
In oder to get acces to my CD-Rom drive I hade to use my startup-disk. Once
"shdocvw.dll" was replaced with the original one (WIN98 cd) I could boot
normally. IE5/Outlook Express5 still would not work though.
Fortunately (unfort..?) IE5 setup creates an installation folder (\windows
IE5 setup...) so I had to rerun installation again from there.
Now it works. At least when I dial into my ISP. The cable modem connection
via ethernet still can't connect...!?
Any ideas?
Thanks for the help.

Actually I found the answer a little while later.
It is finally on Diamond's site, but you probably know that by now.
COMCTL32.dll blind replacement by Diamond is the culprit.
When will these companies learn basic etiquette when dealing with DLL's.
GET ME OUT OF DLL HELL!
