For some reason, I can't get Win98 (second edition upgrade) to recognize
my Cirque glide point. This device doesn't seem to be on any of the
"known hardware glitch" lists, so what is the problem? In Win95, there
was an option from
control panel | mouse | general
where I could change the mouse type and get it installed. The "general"
tab apparently no longer exists. I tried going through control panel |
add hardware, but it's not working. If I add it through there, then
remove the PS2 through device manager, the glide point still wont'
work. After rebooting, Win98 just adds the PS2 back in and it won't let
go of the IRQ that the glide point needs to function. So I go back into
device manager and try to update the glide point driver from the
diskette, but I get a warning message about the driver not matching the
hardware type. Like it's trying to use the glide point driver for the
PS2. Disabling or removing the PS2 profile doesn't make any difference
either. I even tried changing the IRQ steering on the PCI bus
properties, but no effect.

I'm getting really frustrated. What else can I do to get the glide
point in and the *%@#!* PS2 out???

And it is also having shutdown problems. "disable fast shutdown" in
msconfig is already checked. A couple of times after I tried
ctrl-alt-del I got a message that "close window" was not responding.
Other times it just hung. I disabled McAfee scan at shutdown, so some
of this might go away, but I'm not entirely sure it is the sole cause of
this. I've been battling with this thing all day and I'm getting tired,
very tired.

It's an HP Pavilion Pentium 200, which was running Win95B. I tried to
upgrade with it's existing configuration (which had miscellaneous Win95
updates on it), but Win98 went squirrelly right off the bat, so I
reformatted the hard drive, restored everything to it's initial "out of
the box" state, and tried again. And yes, I did shut down all apps
before I started. The only things that were running when I started the
upgrade were Explorer and Systray.

Can somebody help me? Please???!!?? I gotta have my glide point, if
nothing else!

Hi,

Sorry about your frustrating day. Hopefully, the site below will help you
solve your problem. Normally, the manufacturer is the best source of
installation help because they encounter more situations involving their
product(s).

1. Boot and go into BIOS. Look carefully at all your settings, and
disable anything PS/2 that shows up. Now, when you exit BIOS, hold down
the ctrl key, wait for the Startup menu, then enter into *Safe Mode*,
then Device Manager, and remove ALL mousies (and while you're there,
look at everything else. Any duplications?)Then reboot and see what
happens. Didn't work? Go back into Safe Mode, remove the danged thing
again, then immediately install the Glide-Point. I would think GP
provides an entire installation package that will allow you to avoid the
Add Hardware routine. Because of the nature of the operation, you've got
to use the keyboard to navigate, and you do NOT want to just push the
reset button, or hit CAD twice, to reboot. Exit correctly, no matter how
long it takes to figure out how!

Nothing I said helps? Come on back.

Yes, I included sites that are not specifically SE--they still may
apply. And, in fact, fixing one of these two issues just *might* fix the
other, <g>. You never know!

And HP most assuredly causes headaches. Make sure you have thoroughly
researched their website for all possible information regarding your
particular upgrade path.

DOH! Ya know, if I had just listened to myself, I probably coulda figured out
I might need an updated driver. Thanks. It works like a champ now.

Thanks for the ideas, but BIOS was not the problem. A new driver from the
Cirque website fixed it. It was just really confusing with the screwy
things that were happening when I tried again and again to add/delete it.
It just didn't make any sense.

I've been to HP's website many times looking for updated drivers and such.
Seems like they never have anything for my particular model. Figures...
