I have a system (Win 98)used for home business that I use several dos
based accounting programs on. the system was working without any error or
problem but I wanted to have internet connection sharing at home (we have
had a local network for printer sharing for about a year and it has been
working fine), so I purchased Windows 98 SE Upgrade from the local wal-
mart. I followed the instructions and installed the upgrade and everything
seemed to work perfectly. the system restarted and will see the network
and everything, but, whenever I try to open any dos program (I've been
using these programs on this computer for a year) it gives me an error.

It says: This program has performed an illegal operation and will be
terminated. Quit all programs and then restart your computer. ( I've tried
this several times and with four different dos programs) when I click
on "details" it says:
The program tried to execute an invalid instruction.
Fault Location: EB01.0567. (these numbers change each time I reboot or try
again)
Interrupts in Service: None

I've searched and read everything I could find and have run the upgrade
program a second time without any change.

Try turning off Dr. Watson or whatever other error "management" tool
you have installed and then see what the error message (if any) says.

The details error message you reported does not have the content or
format of a standard Windows error message so something must be
intercepting and manipulating these error messages.

Good luck.

The biggest cause for DOS getting an illegal operation that I have seen is
related to McAfee Virus Scan versions 4.0 & 4.0.2 (I am not sure about 4.0.3,
not willing to test it!). I had a hard time proving to the IT dept. that
McAfee was causing major porblems with DOS and other older Windows
applications. I could just hit ENTER in a DOS box and get an illigal
operation and not even give a command. Uninstalling McAfee made several
unexplained problems go away. I would hope that Network Associates have
gotten their act together and fixed the problem in 4.0.3!!!!

Not likely. But then, I'm biased. I have boycotted everything NAI since the mega-merger way back when.
