How do I get Taskmonitor to not start when I boot-up? It comes up in the
Sys. Tray and I right click and tell it to stop using, but the next boot it's
there again. I don't use it and want it to not load.

Thanks

Henry

Rub msconfig
and if it's in startup take it out

Been there - done that. It's not in there or if it is I don't know what it's
called. I assume it has taskmonitor in the title.

Thanks

Doesn't run from run. It's in the Windows folder, but doesn't run from there
either.

Find taskmon.exe and taskman.exe and re-name them to

- taskmon.ex_ (29 kb)
- taskman.ex_ (48 kb)

If win-98 won't let you rename them, boot into DOS and do it that way.

They should be located in your c:\windows directory.

Does anyone know why there is a taskMAN and a taskMON ?

I've checked a few of my win-98 machines and I seem to have done that
(rename them) on those machines at some point in the past. There must
have been a reason for doing that...

I've searched the registry on a few of these machines, looking for
"taskmon" and "taskman".

Search your registry for "taskmon.exe" and "taskman.exe" and nuke any /
all of them. I don't think you'll break anything by doing that. I
can't find any instances of those in my registry(s) so I must have also
done that at some point in the past.

Perhaps taskmon/taskman are pesky things that don't behave according to
"official" settings, and you have to take out the big guns and nuke them
if you don't want them to be running...

Renamed them in Windows folder and rebooted. Taskmonitor still started and
is in the Sys Tray.

I didn't hack the registry.

Do a file-find from Windows (Start, Find, Files or Folders) and search
your C drive (or possibly all accessible drives) for -> taskm*.*

That should find all occurances of taskmon.exe and taskman.exe
(including the ones you renamed).

See if windows restored them from some other location.

If Windows brought them back, then they should have re-appeared in your
windows directory.

Run regedit and search for filemon.exe and fileman.exe and just post
where (under what key location) they exist.

Taskmon is a windows process that is loaded as a service, and monitors
disks access of programs you run. Defrag uses the information that
taskmon gathers to optimize the location of frequently used programs.

Windows taskmon.exe is located in %windir%

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/197791

Windows task monitor does not show itself in the system tray.

If you have a taskmon.exe file in c:\windows\system take a look at this-
