Sometimes when I click on a Notepad file I'll get an error message:
"This file is too large for Notepad too open.
Would you like too use Wordpad to read this file?"
It's really no big deal but, is there any thing I can do to stop this
annoying message?

You can try a text editor without the size limitations of Notepad (or
stop opening files that are too big for Notepad)
I use this:
TextPad: http://www.textpad.com/

Try metapad, it's freeware
http://liquidninja.com/metapad/

Tip: rename metapad.exe to notepad.exe and replace the original notepad
in the Windows folder.

Notepad is a simpleminded text editor. It has many limitations, one of
which is that it cannot handle files bigger than -- um, I think --
64,000 bytes. There's nothing you can do to change that limit.

But, as others have pointed out, there are many free text editors that
can do lots of things that Notepad can't, including removing limits on
the size of the files they can edit. One (or more) of them will fill
your needs.

Yes!!! I love Metapad, too. I have used it to replace Notepad, and
WHAT a difference that makes. I don't think I'd ever go back to
Notepad.). Plus it's very easy to use and configure.

It's not like I'm purposely trying to open Wordpad files whit Notepad files.
This always happens with the "readme" files that come with applications/games
I've installed. In fact, it happens with any Notepad file that I did not
create myself or that came with windows. If there's an alternate application
(free) that I could use to replace both Wordpad and Notepad, that'll be great!

Hi,

The program the others mentioned should do the trick, or you can use
NoteTab Light. http://www.notetab.com/

After installing whichever text editor you decide on, go to your Windows
folder and rename notepad.exe to OLDnotepad.exe; then copy the .exe file
from the other program(probably located in a folder within Program
Files)to the Windows folder and rename it notepad.exe.

This will "fool" Windows into opening the other text editor that can
handle those larger files and thus eliminate the prompt for Wordpad.

Hi Curtis,

While you are deciding on a replacement for Notepad you can have all
text files open with Wordpad.

Select a text file with the left mouse button then right click it
while holding down the shift key. Select "open with", choose Wordpad
and select "Always use".
