Standby mode compared to hibernate mode?

Question in regards to choosing standby or hibernate at shutdown. I would
prefer using standby because it is faster at start up. I
don't leave things that are still in operation when I leave the computer, so
I don't need to worry about loosing anything if there were a power failure.
What I don't know for sure is how much power is being consumed in the
standby mode. All five of the fans are shut off and the monitor is off. It
is
the same as when in hibernate. With hibernate it puts the memory onto the
hard drive and shuts down completely.
Sometimes the computer (that has a 400 watt power supply) will be left in
the standby or hibernate for up to 12 hrs. so maybe there is actually an
important difference. What I am asking is, is there any sizeable difference
in the power consumption from the standby mode compared to the hibernate
mode?

Thank you for any help
MJ

It depends on how deep your suspend mode is. From the sound of it, you're
hitting a full S3 suspend mode, where almost the entire system is shut down
and only enough power to keep the memory modules alive is still flowing.

The largest consumer of electricity on your system is the monitor. Putting
it into a low power state gives you the largest possible savings. The rest
(CPU, hard drives, etc) are petty cash by comparison.

Thanks Richard.....that is pretty much what I had been thinking. I do have
the s3 mode. I guess it is comon sence that very little power is being used
if all of the fans are off.
