Hi,
Years ago, I bought a used Compaq Presario 1230 Windows 98 laptop.
I also downloaded the service manual (.PDF). Sorry, don't have
location.
I am posting this in case someone else has the same model, and to
prevent you from discarding it due to MISLEADING messages when
the CMOS battery runs down. Note: I was going to discard mine.
Unlike other laptops and desktops I have when the CMOS battery runs down,
this model has MISLEADING messages about Systems failure!! That includes the
HDD (not accessibly via a Startup FD).
At boot up, you have an option to Settings, but you have to enter a
"Password". I have NO clue what password.
Fortunately, in the SM (.PDF) on pg 21, "Clearing Power on Password",
but a New CMOS battery must be installed. This also clears corrupt CMOS
settings.
