Is that really an "official" download? I don't see it at
http://www.microsoft.com/directx/default.asp
The URL looks like a WindowsUpdate internal link.

I thought Windows Update was supposed to eliminate having to go all over
looking for the latest versions of software for Win98! DX 6.1 sure isn't
there yet. 8-)

So what?

The DX6.1 available for download is the legit. thing. It went gold a

Filename indicates core version, i.e., original DX6CORE.EXE for use with Win98.
Any explanation as to why DX61CORE is 4,954KB and DX6CORE is only 1,562KB?
Significant size difference, no?

According to the DirectX Web Site it's not "officially" available yet. They
still list DirectX 6.0 and the SDK for same.

There's a scheduled developer chat on Feb 15th - details at
http://www.microsoft.com/directx/ if you're interested.

That just leaves the question, where did you find out about this link?
Is this a link to a beta download that MS didn't release to the
public? If so, even if it went gold doesn't necessarily mean its the
code MS will release.

Active IE is affiliated with about 8 other sites . .they all copy their
info off each other. I guess that one site (prob Bryan's) found the
link and then the other affiliates "borrow" it.

Why would it be that when DX6.1 has gone gold??

> If so, even if it went gold doesn't necessarily mean its the

Yes it does. MS have said (boy! - you don't read Active IE or its
affiliates much do you!! <g>) that the "gold" release will be the version
that gets released to the general public (this is almost 99% of the time
the case with every "gold" software as well).

Gold doesn't mean release. Sorry to burst your bubble. Gold doesn't
even have to be fully working or bug free. Why not wait for the
official releases? Just because its been distributed out to the MS
mirror sites doesn't make it official. Remember Office 97 SR-1? That
was gold.

You don't have to, Chris. Just go to one site -- Windows Update -- and if
there's an update released, it will be there. (Well, within a couple of
days, anyway.)

You likely have the infamous number embedded in link bug. The version of MSHTML.dll, which contains the code in question, that comes with IE5b2 stops reading the link after an imbedded number, thus making many MS links useless to click on.

Try selecting the WHOLE link, not just the highlighted portion, and copying and pasting it to the browser address line (using keyboard shortcuts, or being sure to right click on the UNMARKED portion of the link, or you get just the same clipped link). That usually works.

If you wish to be rid of that error altogether you must make a choice. If you replace that version (back it up first, in case you need it later) with an older 4.x version, say, from the Win98 disk, you correct that problem, but it does not contain the new search bar code, so activating that gives you an error. This of course also can be worked around by loading your favorite search page directly in the main browser window, but it is still a problem. Your choice is therefore one of whether you want to keep the current setup and the link bug, or manually change the dll and forgo the search bar. I use embedded links FAR more than search, so kept the switch.

That is a result of posting in MIME standard Quoted Printable. It is designed for, among other things, 8-bit character encoding, so as to enable non-English language posts, while maintaining basic character readability. One of the specs allows for soft line breaks, so the line can be as long as you want, because the lines are rejoined in compliant readers (non-MIME compliant readers will simply display the hard coded returns, with the escape coded (with equals) control codes). The spec does not call for it, but many readers then either make it an option to auto-wrap those long lines, as Netscape does, or automatically auto-wrap with no option for it, as OE does. Other compliant readers either chop of the text at an arbitrary point (compliant, but recommended against in the specs), or enable a horizontal scroll bar (slightly better, but still a bother).

For more info on the MIME specs, see the official documents. There are 5 MIME papers, starting with RFC 2045(Request for Comments, as the standards start out). Here is a URL for one web archive of that document.

http://www.cis.ohio-state.edu/htbin/rfc/rfc2045.html

From there you can access the table of contents, and therefore other RFCs, if you so desire.

Actually it was nothing like IE5 beta 2.  The DX 6.1 that was available at the aforementioned URL is the final version.  It should not have been released prior to appearing on Windows Update.  Look for it on the WU site very soon.
MS removed 6.1 shortly after it was available. They were not ready for it to be downloaded just like IE5 Beta 2

When a link is pasted into a message and Quoted Printable is not used or the
link is not within >< ie: >link< then they wrap and will lose clickability.
Try these:
http://mschus.www.conxion.com/msdownload/directx/6.1/enduserdl/x86/en/dx61co
re.exe
http://mssjus.www.conxion.com/msdownload/directx/6.1/enduserdl/x86/en/dx61co

It was not really released MS usually tests the download and forgets there are hundreds of people trying to see if they can find a download or update that is not password protected. Or someone that is testing leaks that URL where it is available without a password. I don't think MS is releasing Direct-X Beta's to the public.

Just a long shot but, you could try editing WULog.txt and adding the Directx
6.1 to it.
You will have to wait until until 6.1 is released and someone could post
the line that the update site adds to the WULog.txt. If you could determine
the version # you could add the line and just mimic the entry for 6.0.

Probably not, Ken. I already tried that.

My WULog.txt contains the following line showing the upgrade to 6.0 last
November:
|11/4/98|7:32:42 PM|DirectX 6.0 Technology Update (Build 4.06.00.0318) was
successfully installed.

I tried two things, neither of which worked.

First, I tried copying that line, with a later date, to the end of the log
file, to confirm that 6.0 had been upgraded. It didn't make any difference.

Second, I edited it to list 6.1 and Build 4.06.02.0436 (which is DX 6.1).
This also didn't work.

I don't think Windows Update consults the log. It *writes* to the log, so
you have a trace, but it doesn't base its decisions on the log. It actually
examines your system. So, unless it finds DirectX Build 4.06.00.0318, it's
going to suggest that you add DirectX 6.0 -- even if you've already
installed 6.1 from another source.

Thanks for the information. It seems you have already tried the things I
would have tried, save me a lot of work.
I did say it was a long shot :-)
Thanks
Ken.

Fwiw.....

I think you need to add the below in order for WinUp to be fooled into
seeing DirectX 6.1as already being installed....

REGEDIT4

Yes, I found the same thing yesterday. No surprise. The Update site
determines this by actually reading your hard drive (conspiracy buffs should
tremble!!! <g>).

>I thought about editing the log. I also wondered what would happen if I

Personally, I would not do this without first uninstalling the prior
version.

I actually thought about this -- in case there were small changes made
between then time it showed on other sites, and the time it showed on the
Update site. Does anyone know if this is the case? (Here, I'll make it easy:
The one I downloaded in mid-January was build 4.06.02.0436. Can anyone who
has downloaded off the Update page confirm if this is the same build as what
you got from the Update page?)

But I'd worry a bit about installing the one on top of the other. I'm
following the "It ain't broke so don't fix it" rule -- but it would be worth
knowing if it's the same build.

It's only a log. It shows what WU has done. I can't think of any reason not
to use it as your own personal notepad, though -- for whatever you want to
track in there. It's your computer!

I installed DirectX 6.1 from the update last night and this is what my
WULog.txt shows.
|2/5/99|1:04:31 AM|DirectX 6.1 Technology Update (Build 4.06.02.0436) was
successfully installed.
Looks like version numbers are the same.
Ken.

Thanks for *both* pieces of information.

Thanks, Ken. That's two confirmations in as many minutes. I guess we have
our answer.

(And thanks in advance to anyone else who posts the answer before they see
these.)

It is still there, it's called Dx Diag Shortcut.
