DESTINATION PLAYSTATION, SCOTTSDALE, Ariz., Feb. 26, 2007 - Sony Computer Entertainment America (SCEA) today announced the God of War PSP (PlayStationPortable) Entertainment Pack, a limited-edition offering that celebrates the debut of the best-selling God of War franchise on PSP. This special bundle will feature a limited-edition "Deep Red" PSP with the God of War himself, Kratos, silkscreened on the back of the unit; the highly anticipated God of War: Chains of Olympus game; the hit comedy movie from Columbia Pictures, Superbad, on UMD (Universal Media Disc); and a PLAYSTATIONNetwork voucher to download the Syphon Filter: Combat Ops from the PLAYSTATIONStore for free*.

"God of War is one of the biggest PlayStation franchises, and with its portable premiere on PSP just around the corner, we wanted to offer something special that would appeal to both loyal God of War fans and non-owners who want to enjoy PSP's multi-functionality," said Scott A. Steinberg, vice president, product marketing, SCEA. "This bundle delivers great value, starting with the 'Deep Red' PSP - one of the most highly sought-after colors based on our consumer research - and the Kratos silkscreen. We're also showcasing the diverse entertainment experience PSP offers, centered on a UMD game in God of War: Chains of Olympus that's every bit as impressive as its console sequels, a free download of IGN.com's 2007 PSP Multiplayer Game of the Year - Syphon Filter: Combat Ops, and a box office hit movie in Superbad."

PSP is the first truly integrated handheld entertainment system designed to handle multiple applications - music, video, photo, Internet, and wireless connectivity, with games as its key feature. PSP system features an unmatched library of portable entertainment content, totaling more than 370 games and more than 460 feature films, TV programs, and videos from major studios and record labels, as well as downloadable content from the Internet. More than 31 million PSP units have shipped worldwide.

Sony has announced a free-to-download version 2.0 software upgrade for the Japanese PlayStation Portable that will introduce a web browser and increased versatility in other areas of its multimedia support.

It's due out in Japan next Wednesday, 27th July, and most expect it to be released in North America around the same time. Europe may even see it pre-installed on PSPs. The update will be downloadable through Sony's website (to be installed via USB cable connection) and will be made available on future game discs as well.

However the volume of interesting features is likely to put it firmly on most people's radars - particularly given that it's free. The big issue for some of the PSP's most ardent (and vocal) users however will be its inclusion of previous updates, including the one that ruined the hard work of the "homebrew" PSP development scene, which had been busy creating various tools, emulators and other trinkets to load from the Memory Stick. They will now have to decide whether to give up and upgrade (unlikely) or persist with their struggle to work round the new restrictions.

Asked if Tekken X Street Fighter will be available in the next two years, Harada says he can't commit to that time frame, but he wants to resurface it in a way that will surprise people. "People have been talking about the game for such a long time that they aren't going to be surprised if you just release it normally," he says. He jokes about announcing it by saying, "Hey, you can play it tomorrow," which Bandai Namco did with the free-to-play game Tekken Revolution and Harada says worked well in that case.

After Kato's time at Tecmo, he joined Square and worked on role-playing games including Chrono Trigger and Xenogears. Then he broke off on his own to work as a freelancer and returned to the Ninja Gaiden series in its modern 3-D incarnation to write the script for 2012's Ninja Gaiden 3. The game reviewed poorly, and Kato says the development team cut a lot of what he wrote for the game's ending.

And while some criticize Weekly Famitsu's close relationships with game publishers, those relationships also provide a different level of access than you typically see in the West. Weekly Famitsu often prints download codes for games and features interviews with subjects who rarely appear elsewhere, for example.

As the creative director behind Sony's long-delayed action-adventure game The Last Guardian who then left Sony to finish his work on the game as a freelancer, he's maintained a low profile the past few years. Sony isn't ready to talk about what's going on with the game and what problems it ran into, so neither is Ueda.

Hironobu Sakaguchi, Terra Battle: The download numbers in the U.S. are about half of what they are in Japan right now. It's around 300,000 downloads in America. Japan is 600,000 or 700,000 [as of December 4]. America's download numbers are growing, though. And right now, Terra Battle is a closed game. But after New Year's, we're planning to put out an online mode, and I think that'll help the numbers grow even more.

Koki Kimura, Monster Strike: The game was released in Japan, then Taiwan and now North America. To date, it's been downloaded 15 million times [as of November 12]. And in Japan, we're always playing a seesaw game, basically, with Puzzle & Dragons, and you can look that up easily on any of the data services that put those things out. And then worldwide, we've ranked as high as fourth in sales.

The classic game selection is especially anemic, but for a service that costs about as much as Game Pass it is not bringing anywhere close to the value. I get multiple games released each month on Game Pass that I want to play, not even including the first party releases I get free, like Psychonauts 2, my game of the year last year.

I don't think there's a ton they can do to make PS1/PS2 interesting to me since there are good quality PC emulators available for those games and it's trivial to download anything you want. Not a big fan of streaming games, so the PS3 library is probably a no.

Also, players who have previously purchased the digital version of select games from the original PlayStation and PSP generation will not have to make a separate purchase or sign up to PlayStation Plus to play these titles on PS4 or PS5. When these titles are released for PS4 and PS5, players can head to PlayStation Store and download a version for the consoles at no extra cost if they already own the digital version of the title. Some of the titles will also be available for individual purchase.

spacemanspiff00: Actually PS Now would let you play the catalog of games online even without PS+. You would get cloud saves because how else would you save progress when you streamed, you just couldn't download/upload saves, or get the monthly games. It was a stupid good deal for $60 if you didn't own most of the games you wanted to play on there. It really sucks for people who only had Now because its basically $120 now for the same deal, but now you are forced to pay for PS+ which you didn't even need before. I wish they just added the $40 tier as an option for PS+ for the download only games and kept Now the way it was. But hopefully this gets us better/newer games.
