The file JAVASUP.VXD (Micro$oft Virtual Machine Helper Device for J)
seems to be part of the original code base for win-98se.

I recently uninstalled all JRE versions on a win-98 system and hunted
down various java*.* files and directories and either deleted or moved
them prior to installing JRE version 1.5.15.

After doing that, upon system startup, I get a message (or a complaint)
that the system.ini file is making a reference to a non-existant file
(JAVASUP.VXD). I press a key to dismiss the message, and win-98
continues to start, and seems to operate just fine without the file.

I suppose deleting the reference to JAVASUP.VXD in the system.ini file
will eliminate the message, but I was wondering if win-98 relies on the
file in some obscure or non-obvious way.

A clean install of W98SE and IE 6 includes that file (in C:\Windows\System)
and it is part of the database of SFC, but there is no reference from
System.INI.

Microsoft provided a file to [supposedly] remove all of the registry and
files related to MSJava which is called via several dozen entries and
CLSIDs. Doesn't finish uninstalling until after a reboot.

Like Richards, I see no mention of JAVASUP.VXD in System.ini. It is
probably this Registry key that's calling it...

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\VxD\JAVASUP]
"Start"=hex:00
"StaticVxD"="JAVASUP.VXD"

That's the only mention of JAVASUP.VXD in my Registry, except for in a
cache at...
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Compaq\Service\DCOM\Cache
...that likely self-adjusts.

HOWEVER, the word JAVA appears in my Registry 372 times. Therefore,
MEB's suggestion seems best. And I hope you have a full system backup to
run to should the worst happen!

This is normal and OK. But various Linux-derived apps nowadays use
Java, e.g. Open Office (Star Office): so Win98 users may need for Java
for non-OS apps (cf. also the 15 or 20 Java NGs at msnews.microsoft.com.)
