Does anyone know of a downloadable self-contained copy of the Windows 98
Resource Kit complete with any tools, etc, that came as part of it? I think
it might have been a CD once, but the pages I'm finding are archived on MS
Technet servers and are full of HTML and CSS frills that make reliable
(and uncluttered) viewing of saved pages awkward. I want to read the basic
content, see its images, etc, without the bandwidth load of repeated site
vists. Never mind caches, etc, there's no substitute for a good off-line
version, if there is still is one... I'm fairly sure there was once, in dial-
up days it would have likely been the intended method.

I don't have mine handy, but check the \tools directory on your Win98
CD.

I've been installing off cab files on a hard disk for 12 years. :) I can't
remember when I last saw an actual CD. I thought there might have been some
MSDN stuff on at least one disk, but I also thought it might have been out of
date by now even if I found it. As far as I remember, going online to the MS
site was recommended to see updated stuff, and I was hoping there might now
be some last, definitive update out there.

Thanks. Disk H looks about right.

Big though. I understood it was basically a book, likely buried deep in that
CD. Is there a form that IS a book, in electronic form? Even a huge book
usually comes in around a MB at best. 7 times 49 MB has got to be a tad more
than a book and some tools. I have very limited bandwidth allowance per month
so I'm looking for the information about the structure of W98 (Startup
procedures, installs, stack, graphics subsystem etc... Reformatting the 28
pages off the MS Technet site into storable form will be easier than handling
hundreds of MB of stuff. My best results so far came from following leads via
Google, and the source I keep finding in response to different queries looks
like it can't be a lot larger than a few hundred kilobytes in original form.

Quite likely I have. But even a thick book can usually fit on a floppy disk
or two. That's why I'd hoped some definitive digitisation might be out there.
I found such for the Psion WorkAbout, and that's a FAR more elusive and
obscure machine.

I really don't want a paper copy. Have you ever tried to search a paper copy
for a precise keyword throughout the entire text in fifteen seconds when
you're trying to hold down a complex thought?

1.0 Setup for the Resource Kit Software

The Windows 98 Resource Kit tools and utilities compact disc contains a
Master Setup Program (SETUP\CDSETUP.EXE). This program provides an
overview Setup screen and an easy way to launch the installation
programs for all the different products that ship on the Resource Kit
CD, including the main Resource Kit tools and utilities Setup program.
To run it, insert the Windows 98 Resource Kit Tools and Utilities
compact disc in your CD-ROM drive. The screen will appear automatically.
To install the Resource Kit from this screen, click Install Resource
Kit.

To run the Resource Kit Setup program directly, use the following
procedure:

1. insert the Windows 98 Resource Kit Tools and Utilities
compact disc in your CD-ROM drive.
2. Click Start, and then click Run.
3. Type the following command in the Open textbox:
[drive]:\Setup.Exe where [drive] is the letter of
your CD-ROM drive (e.g., D:\Setup.Exe).
4. Click OK.

The master Setup dialog contains three options:

version of Windows 98 may produce unpredictable results.

1.1 Issues with Specific Tools

The following is a list of issues relating to various Resource Kit
utilities that are included in this release of the Windows 98 Resource
Kit..

1.2 General Setup Instructions

To install the Windows 98 Resource Kit tools and utilities, first
install the Windows 98 operating system, and then use the following
procedure:

To install the Windows 98 Resource Kit

1. Start Windows 98 and insert the Windows 98 Resource Kit Tools and
Utilities compact disc in your CD-ROM drive.
2. When the Autorun screen appears, click Install Resource Kit.
3. Follow the instructions that appear on your screen.

The Setup program installs all the Resource Kit files onto your hard
disk (Default directory=\Program Files\Win98RK) and requires a maximum
of 16 MB of free space for a Typical installation.

Setup also creates a Windows 98 Resource Kit folder on the Start menu
with shortcuts for the Windows 98 Resource Kit online book, the Windows
98 Resource Kit online tools help and the Tools Management Console, a
utility for starting the tools and getting more information about them.

Setup also adds the \Program Files\WIN98RK directory (or the directory
name you choose for installing the utilities) to the system PATH
environment variable.

Some Resource Kit utilities require separate or additional setup besides
the steps described above. The following sections describe some special
setup requirements. For more information about each of these utilities
and others with additional requirements, see the Overview of Windows 98
Resource Kit Tools (WIN98RK.CHM) online Help file.

1.3 Network Administration Tools

Seven of the utilities in the Network Administration (NETADMIN) category
are not installed with the Windows 98 Resource Kit standard
installation. These tools require a separate setup procedure.

Installing System Policy Editor

To avoid unauthorized use, System Policy Editor is not installed in the
standard Windows 98 Resource Kit installation.

To install System Policy Editor from the Windows 98 Resource Kit compact
disc:

1 Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
2 Click the Add/Remove Programs icon.
3 Click the Windows Setup tab, and then click Have Disk.
4 Insert the Windows 98 Resource Kit tools and utilities compact disc
into your CD-ROM drive. In the Install From Disk dialog box, browse
to the \NETADMIN\POLEDIT directory, select the Poledit.Inf file, and
then click OK.
5 In the Have Disk dialog box, check the System Policy Editor item, and
then click Install.

System Policy Editor will be installed and a start menu item will be
added to your Programs\Accessories\System Tools folder.

Installing Password List Editor (PWLEdit.Exe)

To Install Password List Editor

1 In the Add/Remove Programs option in Control Panel, click the Windows
Setup tab, and then click Have Disk.
2 In the Install From Disk dialog box, click Browse. Type the path name
to \NETADMIN\PWLEDIT\PWLEDIT.INF on the Windows 98 Resource Kit
compact
disc, and then click OK.
3 In the Have Disk dialog box, click Password List Editor, and then
click
Install.

The above procedure installs Pwledit.Exe in your \Windows directory and
creates a start menu item in the \Programs\Accessories\System Tools
folder.

Installing Network Monitor (NETMON), Microsoft Remote Registry
(REMOTREG), Microsoft Remote Procedure Call Print Provider (RPCPP), SNMP
AGENT and related files:

These four applications must be installed independently as services
using the Network option of Control Panel. For complete installation
instructions, see the topics on these tools in the Overview of Windows
98 Resource Kit Tools (WIN98RK.CHM) online Help file.

Installing the Internet Explorer Profile Manager

This application is located in the \Reskit\Netadmin\Profmgr directory of
the Windows 98 Resource Kit compact disk. To install this utility, copy
the entire contents of this directory including subdirectories to a
folder of your choice on your hard disk, being careful to maintain the
directory structure. For more information, see the topic on Profile
Manager in the Overview of Windows 98 Resource Kit Tools (WIN98RK.CHM)
online Help file.

2.0 Online Documents

The following table describes the online documents that contain
important information about files available with the Windows 98 Resource
Kit.

WIN98RK.HLP: Help for the Windows 98 Resource Kit utilities, describing
the required files, syntax, and other usage issues, along with examples
for using these tools

RK98BOOK.CHM: The HTML Help version of the Windows 98 Resource Kit book,
containing detailed information about the Windows 98 operating system.

WSHADMIN.HLP: The Windows Scripting Host Administrator's Guide,

Windows Scripting Host application. (Installed with Complete Resource
Kit installation).

WSH.HLP: The Windows Scripting Host Programmer's Reference, an online
guide to the Windows Scripting Host object model. (Installed with
Complete Resource Kit installation).

It would be good to have that without having to download 350 MB to get it.

It's all moot anyway, while the book (judging by the pages on Technet) has a
decent map of the network architecture, and great descriptions of the install
and boot processes, there seems to be no similarly detailed description of
the GDI architecture, with files named, as there is for networks, and that's
what I'm looking for so I'll just have to keep looking elsewhere.

Unless someone knows any better.

Thanks, that's good too. It will also help me when (if) I decide to go from
the ID's and process handles and other stuff in Psion machines to those in
Windows. I still have a quaint belief that such things can be described in
one terse but complete manual, and don't require the many gigabytes of MSDN
to get us to understand. The extreme noise that is MSDN drove me to
eventually discover Lua (manual is on a single page), but I might tackle
Windows programming yet, if my sight lasts long enough.

Not sure if the first link contains the complete thing or just
the /sampler/ , but there are a lot of docs and tools, for
example the second link is another source for the help-file 98Guy
