Responding from Google Groups with a copy of the message I've just
posted through OE6.
By "using OE6" I *did* mean logged on to msnews.microsoft.com (using
OE6) - as I've already mentioned, Google Groups will not allow me to
post.
NO WAIT! This link
http://groups.google.co.uk/group/microsoft.public.win98.gen_discussion/browse_thread/thread/5a97f6eccb68ce3f?hl=en
is now *active* and would allow me to post. (scratches head!).
However, if you follow the link you will see that no-one has replied
to Dan in the thread - not even me. Ve...ery strange!
There is absolutely *no* reference to the message to which Dan (OP)
originally replied showing on this machine.
I find that strange too.
Can no-one provide a better explanation than those already given?
TIA
Dave

Gary ........... you are quite correct when elsewhere you refer to me being
an idiot! ;)
I posted my last message here to the wrong 'No Thanks' thread started by
Dan. I then realised my error. I then posted the following message in the
*other* thread:-
*************************************
*Apology*
I've found the original SPAM - here: http://www.jagadhesh2020.blogspot.com/
Using Google there are TWO separate (but similar) groups.
!.
http://groups.google.co.uk/group/microsoft.public.win98.gen_discussion/topics?hl=en
2.
http://groups.google.co.uk/group/microsoft.public.win98.general.discussion/topics?hl=en
I'm sorry to have persisted with this query - but there must always be
a reason for - well, everything! <wink!>

I trust this explains matters. I'm sorry for making the error. :(

Are you, kind of, suggesting that employees of Microsoft do, in fact,
monitor what happens in these newsgroups (Communities), check the advice
posted and make sure all links posted are 'safe'?
I think they should .......... but suspect that they don't!

Please Note: If you do continue on this route, I will be forced to ignore
you which I would rather not do since I have not even had to do that with
b_nice and b_nice may be knowledgeable but b_nice does not have any manners
in the newsgroups and is one of the very few who have been rude to me in the
past. I have hurt Gary and he has hurt me and hopefully someday we will be
able to look back and smile or maybe even laugh on the past but that day is
not today.
BTW, if you want me even to consider signing up for the newsgroup that you
suggested, your view is not my view of the world. I view myself as the
peacemaker in the 98 general newsgroup if that is at all possible in a
newsgroup.

However, they do respond to reports of spam and remove it promptly. Also,
this sort of spam usually appears in a large number of groups at the same
time, so once they identify it in one group they look for it in all the
others.
There are some groups where MS employees are active, but they operate pretty
much like everyone else. If someone becomes aware of a dangerous link that
isn't obviously spam they will usually comment.

Regretably, this only confirms my fears that 'the bad guys' could, and maybe
do, prey on the innocent folk who come here in desperation when things go
wrong with their computers. It is simple to impersonate someone else and/or
masquerade as an MS MVP - how would a newbie know?
I fear that these newsgroups are a very dangerous place. Just my view!

Indeed! However, I well remember that when I first ventured onto the
Microsoft Communities pages I had thought that I was going to be given
advice and help by employees of the mighty Microsoft itself.
I never for one moment had any idea that 'the system' could be abused in the
ways which I have subsequently discovered. <groan!>
Thanks again for helping others, Jeff. Have a great day! :)
