I am using an older computer and running windows 98 second edition. I can
only get 16 bit color and would like 256 but don't know how to get it. I had
it before but for some reason lost the 256 color and i was told that i might
have to get an update for my video card ... is there anyone who can help me
get the 256 color ... please.

1. Download Everest from here:
http://public.planetmirror.com/pub/majorgeeks/systeminfo/everesthome220.exe

2. Install and then run Everest.

3. Expand "Computer", then look in the "Summary" for your video adapter, in
the Display section. If the name of the adapter appears in blue, click that
and see if Driver Download is offered. If so, click that. If you can't get
any further without being totally confused, post back with the name of the
device, exactly as written, and the address that the Driver Download link
took you, if any. (Copy/Paste from your internet browser.)

Thanks for the link, i did get some updates for a few other things on my
computer but i could not get the update for 256 colors. Here is the video
adaptor and drivers that was listed on my computer ...
Standard PCI Graphics Adaptor (VGA)
Driver Files - c:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\VGA.DRV
- c:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\vmm32.vxd (vdd.vxd)

Provider - Microsoft Corporation
File Version - 4.10.1999

That only shows what Windows installed when it couldn't find anything else.
Having those drivers installed is why you only get 256 colors. You can't
tell from that info what video adapter you have, which is why I suggested
Everest.

I tried to get on the public planet mirror web site and I had not luck, it

Savage 4 device, the file name is "s3_8.dll"

You're talking to a two-year old thread.

Here's a new link for Everest Home Edition:
http://majorgeeks.com/download4181.html

Download it, run it. Click on Computer, then Summary.
What is the Motherboard Name?
What it the Motherboard Chipset?
Expand Display, then click on GPU. What's does the first line say?

Aside from Everest, what is the make and model# of your machine? Example:
Compaq Presario 5735

Now, download http://s3graphics.com/en/download/drivers/Wins3id.exe to your
desktop, run it and note the Chip Name, particularly the number(s) after it.

Please provide ALL of the information I've asked for. Until we're sure of
what you have, DO NOT download or install any drivers. I'm particularly
interested to know if yours is an "onboard display adapter", or do you have
a separate plug-in video card? You can tell by looking at the back of the
machine. Is the VGA (video) connector where you plug in your monitor in
upper section where you plug in your keyboard and mouse, printer, etc., or
is it down farther, in the section of slots? In most cases, a separate video
card will be in the first (top) slot.

I would like you to install 256 colors on my computer. I only have the lowest
bit.

What have you tried so far?

Right-click on the desktop and choose Properties and then Settings. What
options are listed in the Colors list?

Do Start / Settings / Control Panel / System / Device Manager / Display
adapter. What is the name of the display adapter device that is listed?
