I am having difficulty loading WIN 98 OS to a used DELL
Latitude CPx. The hard drive had been wiped and I am
starting from new. Can anyone help with the sequencing of
loading this?

I have a WIN 98 Startup disk and the Operating System CD.

I tried loading after booting with the startup disk and I
am now at a D:/ prompt. It does not recognize the C: drive.

If you are familiar with this particulr model it has the
interchangeable CD/ROM and floppy disk drives. Thanks in
advance!

In addition, I have received an ERROR MESSAGE as follows:

DEVICE DRIVER NOT FOUND: MSCD001
NO VALID CDROM DEVICE DRIVERS SELECTED

I would appreciate any advice what-so-ever.

format c: /s
if the c: drive is unable to be seen the disk may have been wiped and not
reformatted,

Go to http://www.bootdisk.com/bootdisk.htm and create Windows
95b boot floppy. This uses DOS 7.0, which is sufficient for installing
Windows 98. Use it to start the laptop, then use fdisk to create a
DOS partition. If you get a message about "Large disk support",
select "Yes". Leave the floppy in the drive, restart the laptop and
format the partition. Then type "copy /y a:\*.* c:\" and press "Enter".
Shut down, remove the floppy drive, install the CD drive and restart.

Hi,

There's a possibility the C:\ partition is NTFS. In this case the
Win98 boot disk will not see it. I would suggest wiping the drive
completely and starting over. Here are a couple of utilities that
will do this. Harddrive Info - Wipe and Zap
http://www.microstorage.com/Harddriveinfo.htm

Then use these instructions to reinstall Windows.
Windows 98 Restore By Ron Badour MS MVP:

You can also go to the Dell support site, enter the service tag
number and get the latest drivers for the system.

Dear Almost Bob:

Thanxs! I do have the C: prompt.

When I powered up the machine this morning I got a menu
that read as follows:

MICROSOFT WINDOWS 98 STARTUP MENU
1.) Start computer with CD-Rom support
2.) Start computer without CD-Rom support
3.) View the help file

At the bottom it gave me several command options. I chost
the SHIFT F5 for the C: prompt. Any advice from here to
get the OS loaded?

Ben:

Am I simply suppose to be able to insert the WIN95b BOOT
DISK into the A: drive, restart and that's it? I should be
in Windows, right?

The 1st download from the site was corrupted or damaged. I
tried th alternate site and it appears to have been a
successful downlaod.

The downloads at http://www.bootdisk.com/bootdisk.htm are
programs that you download and double-click on a working
computer. You will prompted for a floppy. When the boot
disk is ready, use it to start the laptop. At the A:\> prompt,
type "fdisk" and follow the instructions to create a DOS partition.
After the restart, type "format c:" and format the partition. Then

type "copy /y a:\*.* c:\" and press "Enter". Shut down, remove
the floppy drive, install the CD drive, restart and run "setup.exe"
from the Win98 directory of your Windows 98 CD.
