How can I find out what make and model the modem is?
I asked the manufacturer of the laptop and they gave two possible
different companies and four drivers to try. None seem to work. In the
BIOS setup all I have is COM 1 port and COM 3 port (IR). The modem
when I install try the drivers always is at COMM 3 and the (IR) after
it I have no idea what that means. Is the IR after it something to do
with the infrared port on the computer? The read me that accompanies
the drivers I tried mentions enabling the COM 2 port in bios setup.
Should I not also have a COMM 2 port showing I the bios setup? Is
there a way to force the modem to COM 2 port that does not show in
peripheral setup?
Should tell you all about your modem.

Well it did not show a modem. I have no modem or Com2 showing on this
computer at present. I have read that the modems put in the winbook
xl2 computers are set for Com 2 but in bios setup I only have COM 1
and 3 showing. So no modem drivers have I tried to install and the
above program Everest thus has no modem showing in its results.
I then went and installed a modem driver. I guessed at it from the
three from winbook and it made the modem atomically go to Com3 but
will not work. I did then get a report from Everest with a hardware ID
UNIMODEM4B67D0C2 which I did a google search and before I even looked
further kind of had the feeling it was a universal number ID. I found
a bunch of modems in reference to the number.
One of the two modem it may have in it winbook says it installed is
either the LT WinModem or the ESS ES56CVH-PI. That ID in the google
search shows some Lucent as one of the modem manufacturers. I am
confused does Lucent make LT. Is LT a company or part of Lucent?

What am I to find there a list of sites which one are you pointing to
I can do a google search and have done one already! I thnk you for
tring to help but has done no good!
It would help if you gave us a little more information, eg make and
model of your laptop.
From your other posts I'm assuming you have a Winbook laptop, in which
case the support URL appears to be this one:
http://www.winbookcorp.com/
Most motherboards have a multi-IO chip which incorporates two serial
ports. These can be configured as COM1, 2, 3, or 4. One or more of
these can be set up as an IR port.
Your laptop may have a "soft" or controllerless modem, in which case
its COM port is a "virtual" one, not a real RS232 port. That is, the
virtual COM port is emulated by the modem driver - it is not present
in the hardware.
If you remove all modem devices from Device Manager and then reboot,
is a new device detected? If you abort the installation of drivers for
this new device, what shows up in Other Devices in DM?
What do you see when you follow the procedure described here:

Here are some modem resources that may be useful to you.

Please remove one 'i' from my address when replying by email.
I find it VERY strange that one of the laptop's manufacturer's drivers don't
work. I'd be playing more with those. I also suggest that a modem card, if
you have the space, doesn't cost much.

I think the problem is that no com 2 port shows in bios and the
documentation in the read me that is with the modem drivers from the
winbook people said the modem is setup for COM 2. What are the COM
ports and how are they even on the computer? Are they installed at the
time of windows installation or are they hardware in the computer or
are they ROM in the computer? I got the modem to show at Com 3 (IR and
COM 1 but when I ran the diagnostic under the modem control panel it
said that it could find no modem to test in so many words.
Anyway, when loading modems, until the right driver is found, I find it
useful to wipe all COM ports, the modem and anything obviously related to
those devices from Device Manager (preferably in Safe Mode), just wipe them
out. Then restart and reinstall the devices. I do this *every* time I try a
new set of drivers.
