I set up two dial-up servers (at two different locations) based on
instructions from MS Knowledge Base article # Q139710.
Server #1 : running Win98 and is connected to a TCP/IP peer-to-peer LAN. It
has a dial up 56K modem card in PCI slot.
I tried using TCP/IP protocol for the dial-up adaptor but it will not work.
So NETBUEI protocol is selected. It works, but the data transfer rate is
rather disappointing. It takes about 150 seconds to transfer a 60K size file
to the client PC thru the DUN. I then tried SPX protocol, but I got some
kind of protocol 0 loading error during restarting, and the system becomes
sluggish. So it was aborted.
Server #2 : running Win98 and is connected to a TCP/IP peer-to-peer LAN
also. It has an external modem attached to it. (It can't take a modem card
in PCI slot because somehow the system will assign same IRQ number to it as
the NIC, which then causes it to lose internet browsing capability).
TCP/IP is first selected for the dial-up adaptor setting. It works somehow
!!. The data transfer rate is great. It takes only 25 secs to transfer a 60K
size file to a client PC thru the DUN. NETBEUI is later selcected, and the
slow speed occurs again. This is 600% slower !
From the above two cases, it appears that TCP/IP is more superior than
NETBEUI (and SPX too) when it comes to DUN, though it works only with an
external modem.
Before I give up NETBUEI/SPX, can someone give a second opinion ? I have
noted that in www.wown.com, Dr Helmig always recommend NETBUEI/IPX over
TCP/IP in a LAN network.
Thx

I have said that using an external modem, it is possible to connect to a
dial up server thru DUN using TCP/IP protocol. I just found out that it is
not true. I went out and bought a US Robotics external modem and hooked it
up to server#1, but it would not work on TCP/IP protocols. Netbuei must be
used. So now I can not figure out why TCP/IP worked in Server#2 but not in
Server#1. I checked with MS support team but they could not explain it.
Anyone has similar experience in this area ?
