Almost everyone is receiving these (I myself (at loast count) receive over
4500 of these per day), there's nothing you can do about it.

its an email virus called the SoBig worm. it means that
someone you know or yourself has it. what it does is it
sends out bulk mail to random email address's whenever
you connect to the internet. scan your hard drive for
viruses. if you dont have the virus then dont worry about
it and the return emails will eventually go away.

Actually, it's the Swen.A (aka Gibe-F) worm.

Surely that doesn't prevent them being sent. If I didn't have BB I would not
be able to do any email work just now.

You are not sending them
the virus harvests email addresses from the infected computers address book,
and inserts them in the sent by field, when they turn out to be undeliverable
they bounce back to the faked email address
other viruses simply send themselves to all the addresses in the infected
persons address book with the header saying returned mail.
You will notice that the supposed mail server is NOT your mail server bouncing
your sent mail back, it is a non existent mail server from instructions
embedded in the virus. just block, because unless you are infected you are
not sending them
