I noticed that many of my file types are erroneously listed as Winamp Media
Files. In fact, I ran a find for file type of Winamp Media File, and
received over 10,000 items listed. I uninstalled Winamp and reinstalled,
and it took over again. Winamp users: Do you have the same problem?

Yes, That is a common problem.
Here is a fix for ya, go to the file menu, click on options
then click preferences, then click file setup.
select none, then select only the ones you want.

It worked for me !!!!

If it worked for you, what is the file type listed in your windows root
directory, for shelliconcache? These files without extensions still revert
to winamp media files!

Well i have to say that question is over my head, i will have to consult
with some of my
cyber buddies to see if they know anything about that subject.
I have never really experienced any problems with my winamp version2.29
since i changed the file setup.
In the meantime, i hope i was able to help you out a little and please post
a solution on the news group if someone else comes up with the solution.
I'd be very interested in the answer.

Yes they do. But they have never caused me any problems.

The next time you open Winamp, though, your registry will revert back to the
winamp entry. There is no way to get rid of this if you are running winamp.

Marilyn,

I no longer have WinAmp installed so I can't check on specifics, but to stop
WinAmp from associating itself with the "." (no extension) filetype, Use
Options|Preferences and get to the Setup section (same place where you specify
which extensions WinAmp uses). Toward the bottom right of that display (with
later versions) is a check box that includes the word "directory". Uncheck
this box and the association will go away. The side effect is that the
right-click menu for files will no longer include any WinAmp actions (which is
why WinAmp sets up the key in the first place).

Thanks for your help! The "directory " box was already unchecked, but I
unchecked the box above it that says something to the effect of "register
types on Winamp start" and that did the trick.

Thanks to all for following up on my original post. Good to have this thing

I agree. I delete it in the ROOT and it keeps coming back.
