Can anyone tell me how to set an away message on my
Outlook Express 6. I am going on vacation and want to
have an away message sent to ANYONE who would email me in
my absence. The easy and fast way please!

I do not have and assistant or a wizard under the "Tools
Section". I went directly to outlook (under Tools) and
also Explorer (under Tools). Nothing available. On the
Internet Explorer under Tools I have Messenger but it says
Cannot Find the File C:Program
files\messenger\MSMSGS.EXE. Could it be here?
Any other ideas????

Why would you leave a computer running during an extended
absence--that's a possible fire hazard. Further, with an auto
notification, you may just notify some bad actors that you are away and
they might come help themselves.

This is what Hal Hostetler, IE/OE MVP, said in a recent post:

There is no Out of Office or automatic vacation response feature in
Outlook
Express. You can use Message Rules to automatically reply to incoming
messages, but there are some problems with this:

- You must leave the computer running constantly while gone
- It must be set to send and receive messages on a schedule
- It must not encounter any errors or else it will stop and wait for
user
intervention
- If you belong to any mailing lists be sure to unsubscribe or else
make
sure that the rules will exclude replies to the list. Otherwise you
will
cause an avalanche of messages to the list.

Message Rules

If your ISP provides a vacation response, this is better handled on his
server.

I guess I am an idiot. I found the message rules (create
a message rule) and selected the action as Reply with a
message. Then I Set the conditions as to All. Then the
action for the Rule as Reply with a message. What happens
next is I am supposed to click on the red underlined
MESSAGE and what comes up is my folders or whatever I want
to open. I tried using word and composing a short message
and saving it to the Away folder on my desktop. I saved it
to desktop so I could get it quickly. Then I went back
into outlook to set the rules again and when I click on
Away folder and get the folder with the away message in
it, nothing will open. I can't open anything so it will
set a message. Can you tell me how to set the message and
get it on?

My computer will be used by others with whom I work
(Office full of people who are not going on vacation)
while I am on vacation. No fire hazard here. I do not
want emails coming directly to me while I am gone. I
would prefer an away message to all in my address book
should they choose to email me in my absence... After one
away message they will not send any others until my return.

To set an autoreply using the Message Rules feature, follow the steps below.

1. go to Tools > Message Rules > Mail > New
2. Set the type of rule you would like.

If it is an automatic response (message) to e-mails, select "Reply With
Message" in the Actions, and select your message (must have a .txt, .eml or
.htm extension). Click OK, then OK again and Outlook will confirm the rule.

Go back to Step 1, only this time, click "Apply Now.." instead of "New".

Select the rule to apply, select the folder to apply the rule to, and click
Apply.

Then send yourself a test message to confirm it is setup.
