Can someone help with the following:
1. What is the proper way to shut WIN95 down when it won't shut down
normally?
2. Is it possible to start WIN95 from DOS? How?
3. What is the proper way to re-install WIN95?
4. Can WIN95 be completely eleminated for HD without re-formatting
the HD?

My system went crazy on Thanksgiving Day and hasn't worked properly
since. I think I must have picked up a virus of some sort.

Any help greatly appreciated. Please e-mail me at

2 CTRL-ALT-DELs will have to do until you can figure out what is wrong.
Shutdown problems usually can be traced to software running from the startup
folder. Try moving everything out of there. I have seen a couple cases where
it was the new aol adapter.

The method you should use depends on the reason.

People always seem to imagine the worst. Most of the problems turn out to be
from 3rd party software (drivers, DLLs, and TSRs).

Do you have problems running in safe mode?

Go to Microsofts site using the URL below. The URL points to an article in
Microsoft's Knowledge Base - Title "How to Troubleshoot Windows 95 Shutdown
Problems. The article provides detailed instructions, as your problem may
involve something as minor as a damaged exit sound file, or program(s) loading
from Startup folder, to a program that's modifed lines in your Autoexec/Config
files and/or Win 95 file system settings.
