This may seem like a strange request but I need to trick an install app into
think win95 is actually 98. I've tried playing around with the registry
settings in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion and
changed all the references I could find regarding windows 95 and the version
number but you still get Windows 95 and the old version number both in the
General tab of system properties and from ver when you are in a DOS prompt.
I also tried using the set ver= command in the config.sys file and even
tried merging the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows branch of
the registry from a Win98 machine no luck. If anyone has any ideas I'm more
than open to suggestions. I've limited access to newsgroups so if you could
also e-mail any responses to wi...@lawtons.ca would be greatly appreciated.
You will receive a bounce message (to deter SPAMERS) as this is not a "true"
e-mail address but filters have been put in place on the mail server to
appropriately route these messages until a solution has been found.

Thanks,

If an application requires Win98, it usually means that it needs or uses specific
Win98 files in order to run. Trying to fool the Win98 app by forging the Registry
will probably not help. The developer or programmer may ask the installer to
look for specific Win98 files by their time stamps, size, version, etc. properties
as well as their values in the Registry. In other words, there is too much to
change in order to create the spoof.
