Trying to install 95a via diskettes

I am trying to install Win95a (upgrade) from diskettes onto a Thinkpad 760
with no CD-Rom and it wants a qualifying product. There was a way to
"trick" the program by creating a file called something like "win.386" or
"user.gdi" or something like that on the hard drive but I can not remember
the
procedure. Can anyone help here? There is no way to find a copy of 3.11
around here.
