Since you have the AMD patch, my guess is you can extract the file,
if you have something like winzip. Open the update .exe file with winzip,
unzip it and then look for esdi_506.pdr among the files.
Just to be on the safe side don't throw away the esdi driver that works;
just rename it esdi_506.xxx .
Also along these lines, you'll probably have to do the renaming in safe
mode, where the driver is not loaded.
Hope this helps,
Gregory

ESDI_506.PDR hangs during booting of Windows 95

Help! I'm totally confused. I had a perfectly smooth running AMD K6-2
350MHz computer. I thought that I needed to apply a Windows95 "IDE
Support for SMART, DMA, and ATAPI Tape Drives" update (Q154435).
Totally messed up my computer! It changed the ESDI_506.PDR revison to
an earlier date 08/25/97. Now it hangs when loading windows, freezes up
with black screen and just a C prompt showing. The bootlog.txt file
shows that it stops right at the load of the the ESDI_506.PDR driver.
What I used to have after I ran the AMD Central Processing Unit update
(the timing loop issue on Win95 OSR 2.1, Q192841) way before when I
built the computer was ESDI_506.PDR version dated 09/04/98. So, why not
re-run the AMD patch? I did, the ESDI file changes back to 9/98 version,
but the start-up still hangs. Here's the funny part, I can go back to
an earlier version of ESDI_506.PDR, say 07/95 and it usually works
fine. Except that every other start-up, or so, I get a "Windows
Protection Error" which is characteristic of this AMD timing loop
problem. I am totally confused, the registry does not seem to have been
changed anywhere. I found one reference in the registry that keeps a
list of updates and it noted the IDE update, I blew it away and still no
luck. The IDE update docs claim to only effect this ESDI_506.PDR file.
Here's some specs on the system:
AMD K6-2 350 processor overclocked to 400
a pc-chips PC100 M590 motherboard with on board video and sound
the video chip is a SIS 6326
Windows95 OSR 2.1 with service pack update 1 (and possibly 2 ??)
a Quantum Fireball hard drive set to do DMA mode on IDE channel 1
a CD ROM (DMA mode) on IDE channel 2
a CD RW (not DMA capable) on IDE channal 2 slaved to the CD ROM
Heeeeeelp

Maybe your best bet is to try to bring the system to the state before
applying the AMD patch. Take a look at this article to start
untangling the mess.
Q161020 Implementing Windows 95 Updates (it includes uninstall info)
http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q161/0/20.ASP
Also, go to the page http://www.walbeehm.com/win95upd.html
for further info for all updates.
On a different note, I have seen this advice as part of the procedure
for changing motherboards. Maybe it can help, but be careful.
If the only problem you have is with esdi_506.pdr, boot in safe mode,
go to Control Panel> System> Device Manager and delete the IDE
Controllers. Reboot and let windows redetect and install the drivers.
Just make sure that in the \windows\system\iosubsys you have a good
version of esdi_506.pdr.
