On an old laptop running Windows 95b, when opening the Dos
command window, it uses what looks like a mid European
language characters. There is only US-English installed
for the keyboard and the Regional setting is English-
Canadian. There are no other languages installed.
Windows applications use the proper characters.

Can you describe a bit more detailed what you mean by "mid European
language characters"? German, French, ... ?

Can you change the appearance of the Command windows from its
properties?

What do the characters look like if you don't boot into Windows at
all, i.e. when you boot to the command line interface (also mistakenly
called "boot to DOS")?

Show us the content of your AUTOEXEC.BAT and CONFIG.SYS files.

What brand and model is that laptop, and where was it purchased?

Michael:
Thank you for the reply. The characters appeared to be
Cyrillic or Greek. Booting to a DOS prompt, characters
were normal.
For an unrelated reason, I uninstalled the Norton
Antivirus 2001. On reboot, I checked the DOS prompt and
the characters were back to normal. Not the first time
that the antivirus program has caused an unexpected
result. Anyway, it seems the problem is solved and we
will be using a different antivirus program.

I think you guys should check out http://www.opswat.com/ there are 2 or 3 products that may be a match, I think that OESIS Framework at http://www.opswat.com/products/oesis-framework provide a single interface to many antivirus packages, another option is I think Metascan at http://www.opswat.com/products/metascan which is more for ISV, I also found that many antivirus engines certified by OPSWAT at http://www.opswat.com/certified

I hope this helps.
