I am seeking to find out how to get around the Windows 95
installation error CU0129 (occurs at the start of
"Analyzing Your Computer"). How do I bypass this check?

Please, no responses that say "get another computer" or
the like. And, I've restarted setup in safe mode dozens
of times.

BACKGROUND:

- AST laptop (no CD) hard-drive went out a couple years
ago.

- I recently found a new OEM 815MB hard-drive for it. My
wife is going to use it at school (K-1 teacher)

- I installed new HDD, then did Fdisk and Format using a
Windows 95 startup disk [NOTE: I believe the Fdisk and
Format all went properly. HDD is readable, has some DOS
files on it and reads 815 MB on C:. However, I used
FORMAT C: /u (based on info I found on a website) rather
than FORMAT C: /s (which I noticed the next day on another
website) - Anyway, I'm not sure this has anything to do
with my problem].

- I couldn't find the original installation disks for the
AST, so I am using the Windows 95 installation disks for
Dell laptop I have.

- Since the AST doesn't have a CD, I used the EXTRACT /c
command to copy all the Windows 95 *.cab files (30
diskettes) onto the AST into a directory named c:\win95

- I start the AST laptop with the Dell Windows 95 startup
disk, then launched setup (on C:\win95) from DOS

- I initially got a few bombs as setup tried opening a
couple of the first *.cab files (precopy3.cab and
win95_03.cab). However, I manually used the EXTRACT /e
command and extracted them myself, restarted setup and it
moved past this error.

- But, now I'm stuck at the "Analyzing Your Computer"
section of the setup. It bombs. I get the error SU-129
"Setup was unable to determine your computers hardware
configuration". The setup program terminates and I can't
get around it.

- I've tried turning off the computer, restarting setup,
and selecting the setup safe mode - but it still bombs
with SU0129. I've done this dozens of times.

- There is nothing wrong with the laptop that I know of.
Memory checks out fine. HDD works fine. DD works.
Nothing plugged into the back ports (not even a mouse).

- I found a page on the internet listing dozens of
switches for Windows 95 installation setup. A couple of
the switches (e.g., 'setup /p a') looks like they would
allow me to step through the installation process and
select yes or no to launch a setup module. HOWEVER, using
'setup /?' on my setup program shows that it only knows
about 5 very simple switches that are of no use to me.

- What is the problem and how do I get past it? Is the
hardware detection module of setup missing a file or is
the file corrupted? Which file would that be?

- HELP?

the hardware configuration between two different
laptops differ

it's not generally possible to install a version of windows
from one laptop onto another

the best option is to find or obtain the original windows installtion
designed for your laptop
