I was upgrading my office97 to office2000 and after the reboot I was
asked for the "windows password"?! I did not set any such password and I
can't load windows any more. Any suggestions.
Thanks.

Clicking on Cancel is bad advice.

If you click Cancel in the logon dialog box that appears when Windows 95/98 is starting, your password cache list file is not opened, and your passwords cannot be saved and you will not be currently logged on to Windows 95/98.

Try this article first:

How to Prevent a Windows 95/98 Logon Prompt at Startup

If no joy, it could be a damaged password list or password caching has been disabled in some way. See these articles for possible cures:

Blank Password: If you use user profiles, you should use a password. If
not, go to control panel, passwords, user profiles and ensure the "all
user's" box is marked. If you have a password established, go to control
panel, passwords, change windows password, type the password in the old box,
leave the rest blank and OK your way out. If you have forgotten your
password, do a find on: *.pwl and delete the one with your user name;
however, you will lose all passwords stored in the .pwl file. As an
alternative, you can download a little program called WinPWL3 from
http://www2.memlane.com/aklotz/winpwl.html and it will reveal your
passwords. If you do not have a password established or have deleted the
.pwl file, when the W95/98 logon screen appears at boot, type a user name
only and hit OK twice. Go to control panel, network, primary network logon
and select Windows Logon. If the logon screen continues to appear and you
have Tweak UI installed, go to the Paranoia tab and remove the mark from
"clear last user."
