I'm trying to set up spybot on my win 95 computer, but
after finally being able to download it, I cannot start it
because it says I'm missing the ws2_32.dll. I searched
google and found lots of hits, one with a link to a
microsoft download site. But when I try to download it I
get deadended with an error that says there is no viewer
available for the type of object I am trying to download.
The content type is application/octet stream. If someone
knows how to get this to download please help me.

Thank you!!!

What is the URL of the download you are trying?

This is a standard response for ws2_32.dll

WS2_32.DLL
It comes with Win98 and Win ME but not Win95, but you can get a copy
here: http://www.drd.dyndns.org/index2.html or here:
http://www.softhq.com/support_u.shtml

It also comes with the Winsock2 update
http://www.microsoft.com/windows95/downloads/default.asp

ws2_32.dll is the Winsock2 Update for Win95.
http://www.microsoft.com/windows95/downloads/contents/WUAdminTools/S_WUNetworkingTools/W95Sockets2/Default.asp
Read all the info on the web page, and all the links. Also linked on
that page is the Year 2000 Update for Winsock2 which must be installed
afterwards.

The above leads to
http://download.microsoft.com/download/0/e/0/0e05231b-6bd1-4def-a216-c656fbd22b4e/W95ws2setup.exe

Is that the download you tried?
If so, can you download any other .exe files?

enable downloading these files?

Try this:

If it is only .exe files, then read on and see if this is relevant:
You may have an invalid plugin.
Netscape-Style Plug-ins Do Not Work After Upgrading Internet Explorer
[Q303401]
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;303401

Remove the plugin with Regedit.exe
Start-Run-Regedit.exe
Navigate down to this key and remove it, after exporting it as a
normal safety precaution.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet
Explorer\Plugins\Extension\.exe

If that key exists, then you will see what plugin has been installed.
The key does not normally exist.

If not only .exe files, try this:
Blank Web Page with Placeholder Icon and You Cannot Save a File to
Disk
